Trip Cancellation Insurance? Who Through?

Hi All,

I'm wondering who I might be able to buy trip cancellation insurance through at a reasonable price for just the airline portion of our trip? I'm already covered for medical through hubby's work so I'm just concerned about air, and of course buying the "full refund" tickets through the airline is financially rediculous at those prices!

Anyone have any experience?

Check with your credit cards as well. We got ours through them and it was cheap.

we purchased ours through CIBC for our plane tickets. (we are a 4 person family). there were different levels of insurance coverage to choose from. My DH handled the transaction so I am not completely sure but I think that it was around $110 for trip cancellation and Medical top up for all 4 of us for 11 days.

Thanks everyone! :thumbsup2 I'll price out some of these options and report back with what I found out.

Thanks again,

Applemomma

I go with CAA. One time I bought my dd trip cancellation for her flight to Europe thru the booking web site and it was a joke. I phoned them to find out some info cause they were stuck at Heathrow, but airline eventually put them up in hotel. So now I always use CAA.

We are covered as well for medical through both of our works.

We pay $69 a year for the remainder of our Travel coverage needs..trip cancellation, inturuption , lost baggage..etc..

It is through our BMO Master Card. It covers unlimited trips per year for up to 31 days in length. It covers anyone in your household as long as they trip is paid for with your Mastercard.

Best option for you!!

My CIBC Infinite Visa card has it included for free if you purchase your tickets with the Visa card. It also gives me lost baggage ,trip interuption funds, car rental insurance coverage ,medical and medivac and a bunch more. All for free. Check with your CC provider.

But the CIBC Infinate Visa's have a $120 a year annual fee...so essentially you are paying for your insurance and the other options. That is why we didn't go with that Visa.

True, but we don't need to buy insurance for every trip we take.(2-3 a year) We use that Visa Aerogold for everything and when we fly we only pay for the tax portion of the tickets. I just booked 3 return tickets from Edmonton to Halifax in August for $312.00. Total. We always rent a car for the three weeks and since the insurance is around $10 a day the card pays for itself. So the insurance part is just a bonus.
We use the Visa to pay for all household expenses, groceries, insurance and we always get a free trip every two years:cool1:

Do you mean that the insurance on the car is $10 a day? If so check with your regular car insurance (assuming you own a car), we use State Farm & they advised us never pay for the extra insurance for a rental, State Farm covers our rental cars. We just bring our pink slips with us & the rental place photocopies them & we are insured.

we have medical with DH's work but look at the limits they are not very much, we were on a trip where a lady broker her leg and the hospital alone was $20K a day before any treatment and they wanted her to her to pay upfront
we bought through Disney it was very reasonable for 4 of us for everything air, medical, cancelation it was $133 for 2 weeks
BMO also offers free cancelation if you buy medical and exchange $100 at the same time

For rentals it is about that but we just decline it and our Visa covers it.

We are insured thru Great West Life thru my husbands work & they offer travel insurance, & I know 2 people that have used it & you have to pay up front. Imagine having an "up front" bill of $20,000 or more? We always buy medical insurance just in case & don't rely on GWL. The one lady I know had a nose bleed that wouldn't stop in Atlantic City, they ended up having to go to the hospital & have it cauterized. She had to pay up front with GWL & then when she tried to submit the claim at home, GWL told her it was an unnecessary medical emergency & it could have waited until she got home & refused to pay out her claim. They never got their money back from GWL & they always buy extra medical insurance from now on.

I priced out for insurance with both RBC insurance and PC Financial and PC was WAY WAY cheaper. As a former travel agent my first choice was RBC, but I looked and their coverage was very similar.

Thanks I am going to check that out

Haven't had much time to get researching yet but I've checked both my credit cards and one I'd have to upgrade my card with a $110 yearly fee (not discounting that option yet) and the other one I'd have to pay a fee and it would only cover my children, spouse and myself, not my traveling companion (in this case my mother).

Still researching! :surfweb:

Thanks for all your responses!

We book our trip on our own and just get the insurance through a local travel agent. I don't remember the cost but it was very reasonable.:)

Check CAA, their emergency medical for my DH, me & DS was $43 for 1 week. I've never bought cancellation but CAA has good rates. I think if I remember right, they deal with Manulife.
