Tricky baggage question...

So my niece is arriving at MCO one day later than us, on Feb. 2nd, mid-day. Heading for POR and using DME. But she has a short transfer time in Detroit (flying Delta and coming in from Soo, Michigan), and her checked baggage may not make it on her flight with her. The baggage will be yellow tagged.

Two questions...

1.If her checked baggage comes in on a later Delta flight, will it be spotted at the airport and delivered to POR, even though she will have arrived earlier in the day?

2. What happens if her baggage arrives at MCO after 10 p.m. and she is not there to claim it?

Thanks for the help.

If her bag arrives on a later flight, it still will be pulled behind the scenes for transport to WDW as long as it is tagged for DME. If it arrives after 10 p.m. it will run out to the carousel and be rounded up by the airline per their normal procedures of she is not there to collect it. However, that's what would happen if it was tagged or not. Presumably DME goes through that baggage to ID tagged bags once they are back up and running in the morning and eventually it would make it to her resort.

IMO, the issue with the bags being unclaimed if they arrive late is basically the same if they were tagged or not. The difference will be if she wants to wait for them and file a claim with the airline herself if the bags don't make it on her flight or if she wants DME to track it down for here. If the former is the preferred option, leave off the tags and deal with it as you would in any other situation. If she wants DME to take it, put the tags on and start checking with them if the bags don't arrive at the room within about four hours after she gets to the resort.

FUR+ (facts until refuted) not IMO

1. You want Magical Express to handle your bags and your plane stops at the gate* before 10 PM.
Just go to the DME welcoming area and take the bus. Yellow tagged bags are summarily removed to the resorts (ca dawn if they arrived after 10 PM) unsynchronized with guest movements. The normal DME procedure at your resort for making missing baggage claims applies.

2. You want to handle your bags yourself.
Do not use the yellow tags. Go to baggage claim at the airport and get your bags, filing a claim for any that did not arrive.

3. Your plane stops at the gate* after 10 PM.
Go to baggage claim at the airport and get your bags with and/or without yellow tags, filing a claim for any that did not arrive.

* The first and last persons to step off the plane have to do the same thing regarding after 10 PM arrival.

+ At some time in the future, Disney may publish more precise guidelines for example whether 10 PM applies to when the plane door is opened as opposed to when the plane stops at the gate.

I will not refute any of that but none of it addresses one of the key initial questions: What happens if the passenger tags their bags and arrives on a flight before 10 p.m., but their tagged bags do not make that flight and are placed on a later flight that does not arrive until after 10 p.m.? In that case, the passenger would have no reason to go to baggage claim and the bags would not be collected behind the scenes by DME.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any facts that would address that exact scenario. Fortunately, the scenario is rare enough that it usually will not be a concern.

The guest arriving before 10 PM would not only have no reason to go to baggage claim; she could not accomplish anything there because yellow tagged bags are not put on the carousel.

The bags arriving after 10 PM would be put out on the carousel. Meanwhile in this scenario, the flight is not the guest's and the guest is long gone (via Magical Express to her resort). The requirement to claim one's own bags after 10 PM does not apply in this scenario.

After perhaps an hour, all the unclaimed bags are taken off and taken to a storage area. Around 6 AM or so the Magical Express folks come back and take any yellow tagged bags from the storage area and take them to DME. There is anecdotal evidence that once in a blue moon a yellow tagged bag is missed at this juncture although it is retrieved after the DME folks at the airport get kibitzed by a call from the resort in behalf of the guest.

This is also one of the few instances when a guest might get back from the park that just closed and find a DME bag missing from her room. An initial immediate call down to the front desk elicits little or no useful information since DME baggage operations at the airport have shut down. The guest might be told to call back around 7 AM or so. Then she might be told that "the bag isn't at the resort and I'll (the front desk person on the phone will) call the airport to put in a tracer" or "the bag got missed and is still at the airport" or "the bag is on the way" or something like that.

according to my friend who works for Delta at DTW when they load a plane with Bags they try to put the ones with a connecting flight towards the door so they can get it to the next plane in time. That's just what he tole me because I had the same concern once on a flight we took.

(Please don's anyone yell at me or start stuff, I am just saying what I have been told by a Delta Baggage handler at DTW he has worked for North West/Delta for 20 years)

But of luck to her in her travels, I hope it all works out smooth for her.

Delta has an place on their app where you can trace checked luggage. You either enter the claim check # or scan it with your phone. I like to use it for peace of mind, especially with a connection. I had a 30 min connection at CVG last year, I was surprised how fast my bag was moved. If the bag does not make the connection, she could let the ME people know and ask for advice.

That's awesome!!! More airlines should do that.

You are probably worrying for nothing. You would be surprised how quickly luggage can be transferred. It is very likely that her luggage will make the transfer to the connecting flight.

If the bags get on a later flight, arriving after 10pm, they will stay at the baggage claim area (I have been told that they do, in fact, go out to the public carousel). First thing in the morning, all DME tagged bags will be sent to the appropriate resorts....they start around 5am.

The airlines want you to have your bags...with a tight connection, the bags should be held closer to the front of the compartment, so they can be taken to the new flight more quickly.
