I'm sitting on my porch.....with a giant bucket of over-stuffed
bags of candy to give out.....
We get lots of kids.....usually by the dozen....

one little girl about 5 is carrying a disposable camera size
container with a hole for money on top....
shoves the container at me and waits....

I dont have any money handy so i give her a bag
and say ........sorry i dont have money on me...

she runs to her parents and says "i didnt get anything" :confused3

hold up......
i just went to the door for a treater...i came in to type this...
and it is SOMEONE ELSE with a unicef container.....
this time the parent......never seen them before..... says its
for a playgroop....i say the same thing :confused3

Am i a scrooge or is this cheesy :confused3

What... :confused3 I've spent all kinds of money on candy :rotfl2: :rotfl2: they're getting candy :rotfl: Okay... now I'm going to be the house that hands out the best candy... and money :woohoo:

Trick or Treat for UNICEF--we ALWAYS did that as kids but it has been years since anyone I know has done that. I did see the containers at Hallmark this year. I think I need to get a bowl of change ready.

DD7 is going out with a box tonight - it is the first year I remember the school giving them out. I hope that she gets some change - the total amount won't mean as much to her as the fact that she gets SOMETHING - even pennies would be ok.

Do what you thiink is right....

Jill

We used to do this every year. The school would hand out the boxes and we would wear them around our necks. There were prizes for kids who collected the most. Everyone had a jar or dish of pennies and nickles to fill the boxes with, along with handing out candy. The money all went to UNICEF projects to help children around the world.

we always use to Trick or Treat for UNICEF when I was a kid. On the sunday before Halloween, we would trick or treat with our youth group.

I am 47, so this was many, many years ago. I really didn't know they still did it because the church we attend now doesn't do it.

I think its a great way for kids to learn about giving for others.

What a great idea. I didn´t know this was done.

OK now i feel cheesy
i'm from bklyn....lucky we got candy :lmao: :rotfl2:
Glad i have a bowl of change upstairs....
feel like chasin em down....
I guess when my daughter starts public school
i'll find all this out....
Candy and change ready :teeth:

Gosh it has been years ....
still i have candy.....and well when they come to my house they get candy...(just always get rid of any spare change rather then carry it home ...so we dont have any)
Hope her parents let her get candy as well as donations...otherwise that would be a bummer for the kid

We always used to Trick Or Treat for Unicef as kids. I think the schools used to give out the containers.

When I was put in Catholic school, we would trick or treat for some charity or other. But it was always official.

I haven't seen kids do it in years. I did see the containers this year at Hallmark for the first time in a long time.

I was forced by my mother to do this when I was a young child... about 43 years ago. I was expecting to get to trick or treat as normal. With no warning or explanation, I got the box and was told I couldn't get any candy. I had to collect for poor African children. Boy was I mad!
So I still have a bad feeling about UNICEF :rotfl:

It's great though, if kids want to do this on their own free will. :sunny:

Hmm... It was never one or the other for me. I took my candy back & my box.

When my sons were Cub Scouts about five years ago their pack did the Unicef Trick or Treating. They carried their regular bags for their candy and also held out the Unicef box for any change they could collect. Some people are great with it and others don't want to give. I always have some loose change around in case any neighborhood kids are doing this.

Until they announce it in the paper--I'm not going to sweat it. I haven't seen a unicef container in years. If necessary, I'll pull some quarters out of the piggy bank. But a press release from the groups that plan this fundraiser---should be released. How else is those who don't have students in the school system supposed to know. (And for some kids in my neighborhood, sadly, it is doubtful the money would end up where it is intended.)

Well, my mother was notorious for doing stuff like that, ie, a no trick or treating decision at the last minute), but then she was bi-polar, so I never knew if any holiday was going to be "fun" or "torture".

i grew up in the 50's and we did that.

I collected for Unicef as a child when I was in Catholic school.

They have been playing commercials on tv for the last couple of weeks talking about the kids collecting on Halloween.
