Don't laugh!

I'm serious here.

The other day I took a package of pork chops out of the freezer to thaw, I sat them on the counter.

A few hours later I passed through the kitchen and put my hand on them to see if they were thawed or still a bit frozen. A sharp bone was poking out through the packaging and it sliced the palm my hand as I ran it over the package :crazy2:

So I cleaned it and bandaged it, (my hand, not the chop) but today it is swollen and feels hot and I just don't feel well, so I started thinking about trichinosis :scared:

I don't think you can get trichinosis from a wound injury, it's usually digested. But don't worry, there are plenty of other yummy and delicious bacteria on pork... Besides, trich is pretty rare now because I don't think the pigs eat raw meat anymore, and that's how the pigs get the trich.

Although I gotta say, after my micro lecture on worm infections, I seriously considered being a vegetarian. Then we got lectures on bacteria that like veggies, and now no food seems safe to eat.

I had to open this to see how one could actually get a wound from a pork chop :rotfl:
Sorry I know you are worried. You get trichinosis by eating raw or undercooked pork. You have to ingest the parasite and they live in the intestines, it would not stay in your finger.

I am not a doctor so I may be totally wrong, but I thought you could only get trichonosis (or worms as my mother always calls it) by eating the parasite.

I was pretty surprized when it cut me like that, it's a big gash on my palm and it hurts like HE-double sticks. I put some polysporin on it tonight and I hope it's better tomorrow and it hurts when I use my mouse or type. I just keep thinking that a raw bone did it and thinking about all the bacteria on pork :crazy2:

If you don't feel better tomorrow, you should probably see your doctor. It may not be trichinosis, but it sounds like you have an infection. Sorry you're feeling bad!

I really don't know what to say other then if it doesn't heal and you still feel bad in the next day or 2, go to the drs. Other then that, only other advice I can give you is that you aren't supposed to thaw meat out on the counter. Your supposed to thaw meat out either in the microwave or the refrigerator. I would be more concerned eating meat that's been sitting on the counter thawing out then that cut on your hand.

Sorry that I initially giggled at you! :lmao:

On second thought, monitor it for signs of infection -- redness, heat, swollenness, oozing :scared: , excessive pain, etc. You won't get a worm, but you could get some other kind of infection from the pork and/or just from regular bacteria in the air, etc.

If it seems to be getting infected and any initial pain/swelling isn't improving, go to the doctor. You're probably safe to wait a day or two and see if it improves, though.

Not it's not trichinosis. Most wound infections are from your own bacteria that were on the surface of your skin entering an open wound (usually staph or strep). If the wound is red, swollen & hot, I would have it examined by a physician. And stay away from pork chops!! :upsidedow

Pork's Revenge!

Seriously, I hope you'll call the doctor if it shows any signs of infection over the next day or two. I would be a little worried too.

No way it is trichinosis.

1. You have to INGEST the meat to get trichinosis. You can't get it from a cut.

2. The commercial US pork supply has been almost completely free of the parasite that causes this disease for the last 10 years or more, due to changes in hog feeding practice. The few cases of trichinosis reported each year are mostly from eating bear meat or home-reared pigs.

Well how does the cut look today?

Kind of ironic for me to stumble on this thread. We had pork chops last night (which yes were also thawing on my counter - I have been thawing meat on my counter for 30+ years & have never once gotten sick from it!) - and cut my finger on a knife that I didn't see, precisely at the same time I was checking the raw meat! My very 1st thought was "OMG wash this & clean it with alcohol - raw meat bacteria!" So you're not crazy to think the way you are about your wound.

By the way my cut is absolutely fine. Hope yours is too!

I had to go to the hospital today, my hand had ballooned up on the palm into a shiny swollen bubble thing. They had to lance it :scared: :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint:

drain the fluid and pus away and I had 2 shots and antibiotics to take, they are checking me for a staph infection. I had pain moving up my arm like it was blood poisoning - all so fast I just cut my hand on the pork chop on sunday.

I got some pain killers too :thumbsup2 but I feel sick to my stomach

Cellulitis? My DH had a cut on his foot. He felt unwell, then the tissue started swelling and was hot.
