Sorry if this has been covered, I did a search and didn't find much...

I saw in the bounceback thread someone mentioned there was a triathlon at the Fort this weekend. We are supposed to check in on Sunday (mother's day). I had hoped to check in around noon (even if we can't get in the Cabin yet) and head over to the MK for the afternoon.

How much impact will the triathlon have on Sunday? Will the boats be running? Just trying to prepare! I had no idea this was happening!

Thanks!

Hello fivikse ........ The information that TCD provided in his May 2009 Trip Report should help answer your questions!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but things will be a bit chaotic at the Fort on Sunday morning.

If you take a look at this link, you will see that the swimming for the triathlon will be conducted in Bay Lake, and the biking and running transition area will be in the field between Pioneer Hall and the Fort Wilderness Pavilion.

Last year, the Settlement area was shut down for all forms of transportation until after noon. That means no boats. You couldn't even drive a golf cart down there, as the path normally used for golf carts was being used for the bike leg. They converted a couple of sites in the 700 loop to a golf cart parking area, and if you wanted to go to Trail's End, you had to walk from there.

It is all handled very well, but there will be over 2000 athletes competing, and they will all be coming and going from the Settlement area of the Fort from before sunrise until early afternoon on Sunday.

We've been there during the triathlon and it was pretty neat to see. We went to breakfast at TE during the time they were transitioning to their bikes and we enjoyed watching them go by. The swimming must have been over early. It didn't really interfere with any of our plans, but we were within walking distance of the Settlement so had no problem moving around.

I heard Danskin is May 9th and Ironman is May 16th. What will this mean for people staying at the Fort?

Read posts 2,3 and 4 above and the links posted therein.

That will tell you about all there is to know.

Thanks for the information. I had no idea this was happening! Better to find out now :)

Grab a cow bell, noise maker or just come and clap but come on out and cheer us on. Danskin triathlon is on Sunday morning May 9, Ironkids is Saturday morning May 15 and Ironman 70.3 is Sunday morning May 16. The events are not only fun to compete in but fun to watch. We will be moving over to the fort tomorrow evening because it is easier for us on race morning to be staying at the race venue. There is also a Muddy Buddy event this Saturday over at Wide World of Sports. That one is really fun to watch because everyone has to crawl through a mud pit to get to the finish line.

On 5/16 we have an ADR at Crystal Palace for 8:00 AM. Before we knew about the triathlon, the plan was to drive our golf cart to the boat dock & take the boat to MK. Now it looks like the only choice is to take a bus to TTC. Is this correct? How long should we allow for transportation?
Good luck to all the in the race!

First swim wave goes off at 6:20 or so. Then everyone will be leaving on their bikes. I don't know about the bus schedule but that may be in the athlete's guide on the website. Google - Ironman Florida 70.3 and you should be able to find the athletes guide in PDF format.

That is how it was handled last year- MK transportation on the morning of the race was via bus from the Outpost Depot. And, you will be dropped off at the MK-not the TTC. I suspect that there will be plenty of buses going out, as there sure will be plenty of buses coming in to bring the participants and spectators.

But, you will be given information about this at check-in, so make sure you pay attention to that. And, since WDW is causing this inconvenience for you, I would ask if there are any other alternatives available for transportation to ensure you make it for your ADR. You never know, maybe they will send a van for you or something.

Don't sweat it. At least you know this is coming, and you can plan accordingly. If you are heading out to the MK for the morning, things will be pretty much getting back to normal at the Fort by the afternoon.
