Triathlon Thread 2009

Sat: 55 mile ride...intentionally went to find hills...they are here Liz! 5 circuits of Bluff Road, and then a ton of time in Lemont, and then a 4.5 mile cruiser run 48 minutes.

Sun: 10 mile cruiser...just couldn't put the hammer down, 1:47:11...10:42 pace; then a 17 mile, 1:29:22 ride at Waterfall Glen...again, found hills, and worked them hard.

Hang in there folks!

Mike

16 miles through the downtown portion of the Honolulu Marathon course. We played it smart, and ran through the shadows of the trees and buildings downtown. Helped keep us slightly cooler than normal.

We staycationed in Waikiki for the 4th of July fireworks. Nice 2 days in the pool and on the beach.

Have a great week everyone.

Hey guys!

I don't post here often, but I just got an e-mail announcing the cancellation of the AFAC Tri @ WDW in September. Bummer :-(

Have to go find another nice one nearby sometime soon..............

8.25 miles in 1:12. Felt slower than normal, but I'll take it.

Have a great WISH Wednesday.

Hi Everyone,

Did all three sections of the Tri on Monday to get a feel for it. There were 7 of us doing it together so it turned out to be a lot of fun. We waited in between sections for everyone to catch up which helped in not feeling too tired or stressed. I only managed to put my face in the water a few times. Oh well. I timed each individual section and was pleased with how it went. Now to practice the transition a couple times and I think I'll be ready. Just 11 days away.

Have a great day everyone.

Hi guys... I haven't posted on here in a while but my olympic distance tri is coming up far too fast (less than 2 months) and I haven't even started training for it! 1 mile swim, 22 mile bike and 6 mile run... just worried about the swim taking forever.. I normally swim a quarter mile in 15 minutes... so thinking about swimming for a whole hour scares me!

Carrie....I'm catching up on WISH stuff and finally read your RR. Good job! So, yes, it was a struggle, but you hung in there! And learned some things, so good for you! (oh, and thanks for your kind words on my Kansas RR)

Experience will help a lot of those issues going forward, believe me.

I would suggest to maybe not learn a dependence on the tunes you referenced a couple of times. It's tough, I know, but that is the time to dig deep within yourself and find that inner strength. Maybe come up with a mantra to get you through those times, since you can't have music. And yes, I've been on my own at the back...so I know the feeling. It's super mental toughness!! And YOU HAVE IT! :thumbsup2

Everyone else...keep up the good training!!
A couple of you worried about swims...the way to fix that is to swim more! Just like the run is my weakness, so I don't go out of my way to run more often. But that is exactly what I need to do!

Will do a duathlon in a couple of weekends. Would rather do a tri that is the same weekend, but this is to work on my running, so I'm doing what I *need* to do, and not the *fun* option. :goodvibes

8.25 miles in 1:11. Knocked a minute of our time from Tuesday.

Happy Aloha Friday peeps!

Swam in the open ocean on Saturday up on the North Shore. I was escorted for 200 yards by a green sea turtle. Banked 1,500 meters in the current.

Tuesday's run was another 8.25 miles, 1:11. I had very little energy or drive in my legs, yet still managed the same time as usual. I had no gas in the tank to get my swim in. Oh well, that's fine with me. :lmao:

I received my refurbished Garmin 405 in the mail today. They replaced my original due to battery charging issues.

Hope you're all logging your miles and reps.

Good lord Jeff.

I got in 8 miles in 1:18 and thought that must be how it feels to be you...I was wrong...

Off to the pool...I'd rather have green turtle escort than the cranky 0500 swimmers club I have at the YMCA.

Wishing good workouts to you folks!

Mike

Mike - remeber that we are only racing against ourselves. ;) You want to feel better? I'd be thrilled with 1:24 for 8 miles.

Have my next tri Saturday. Last practice one before Chicago Suppsed ot be 58 to 62 while I'm out there and a 30% chance of rain. :scared1: I gues we'll see hwat happens...

I'd rather have the cranky swimmers, than NO @#$(&#$ lifeguard!

He didn't show up. :headache::headache::headache:

I might try to make my point on Friday morning...but I'm not sure he'll be able to hear me whilst I'm holding his head under water.

:mad::mad::mad:

Oh not good...get 'em!!

I need to get in long run plus long bike this weekend. Trying to decide which day to do which. Thinking bike Sat then run Sun. Toss in a short casual swim Sat afternoon. Yeah, that might work....

Mike,

How did the YMCA have no lifeguard? So was the pool closed because of this?

When I worked at the local one year's ago, if the lifeguard was a no show, late, or needed to use the bathroom, I became the temporary lifeguard on duty. I worked in the office.

Go talk to the Sports Director, and fill out a "suggestion box" card so they know what's on your mind.

I am only guessing here, I expect they did not allow anyone to swim because there was no life guard. They do not allow you to use a spinning bike without an employee present at this YMCA. I have been reprimanded quite a few times for the bike thing. What is a person to due when the the Spin instructor does not show?:confused3

That stinks Mike!

Liz - You could come do my tri with me adn get it all in at once on Saturday. :thumbsup2

At Lifetime the pool is open 24/7 and there are only lifeguards during family swim hours. Otherwise you're on your own.

Todd - you can't use the spin bike w/o an instructor?? That's a bit much.

Carrie - don't tempt me ;)

Todd nailed it from the blue line! The doors to the pool are locked unless a lifeguard unlocks them. I've never gotten the stink eye for spinning without an instructor present. Did you go on the Saturday AM in winter to Gary's class? Training partner and me used to get in there at 0600 or so for the 0730 start....
