Thursday
We slept in and then had breakfast at the Omelet Station. Rob had the surfer's breakfast. It was basically Eggs Benedict with crab meat added. (YUCK! He loves seafood, I don't)
We drove our car to the port, paid $45 for parking and headed into the terminal. It was alot like going through security at the airport. We checked in and got our "Key to the World" card--room key, and charge card. You must have this key (and a photo ID) every time you get on or off the ship.
We had time to pose for photos with Mickey and Goofy and admire the model of the ship. About an hour later, A cast member announced " please welcome aboard the Stone Family". We walked into the atrium to the sound of a welcoming thunderous applause (or at least a polite applause given by a dozen cast members who were probably tired of smiling and clapping by then).
Parrot Cay Restaurant was full so we were directed up to Beach Blanket Buffet for lunch. After that it was time to explore the ship. We took a few pictures while we walked around. It was cold enough that we had to wear our jackets out on deck. Apparently someone invited the cold front to come along on our cruise with us. It followed us all the way to the Bahamas. It was warm before we got there, and it warmed up right after we left! I'll never cruise in February again.
It was time to meet my buddies from the DisBoards (an internet discussion group for Disney junkies like myself). We had been chatting on line for a few months prior to the cruise. We visited for 20 to 30 minutes and took a photo. I did see, and chat with a few of them later in the cruise. We were participating in a gift exchange.
Outside of each door is a metal fish. You can tuck notes behind it. Each cabin hangs a "Fish Extender" (usually a custom fabric organizer with a pocket for each person). There wasn't any cute Disney fabric in Panama City, and I didn't want to buy one off Ebay (yes, go look them up on ebay and you'll see what I'm talking about.)....so I went with a "no sew" option. I put iron on name tags on 2 little canvas tote bags. For my gift, I made a monthly, 2009 calendar with images from the
Disney Cruise Line, and
Castaway Cay. This calendar fits inside a music CD case. The case, if you take it apart and put it back together backwards makes a display easel. I also made little goodie bags with candy and Disney items from the dollar store for the kids. (What kid appreciates a calendar, even with Mickey Mouse on it?) I also printed out a few custom magnets with Disney graphics for our state room door.
We were in cabin 6008 on deck 6. We had been given a complementary upgrade from category 12 (inside room with no window and thus, the cheapest) to a category 8 with a large window. Category 8 rooms have a split bathroom design to make getting showered and dressed a little easier. Our queen bed could be pulled apart to make 2 beds, our sofa could be made into a single bed, and there was a pull down bed in the ceiling over the sofa. We had plenty of room for the two of us.
Next was the safety drill. We had to put on our life jackets and meet at a designated location by life boat #6. It was cold up on deck and I was grateful to be in a crowd to block the wind. We put our jackets on and went up to deck 10 to watch the sail away party. It was fun to watch the ship leave the port and head out to sea. Then it was time to get dressed for dinner.
We had dinner reservations for Palo that night. This restaurant is only for adults and has a required dress code. The food was fine, but I enjoyed the view, and my companion the most. Palo is on the very back of the ship with lots of windows to take in the ocean view. We had a table for two by the window and a picture perfect sunset. Our waiter, Michael was very nice and attentive. He is from the Philippines. He had a noticeable accent and we had to listen carefully as he talked to us so we could understand him. He noticed Rob's entree was small and offered to bring another. Rob declined, wanting to save room for dessert. We had both ordered the chocolate soufflé for dessert so he brought us a vanilla fruit dessert to try as well. (All food is included on the cruise. However, there is an extra $15 charge per person for Palo.)
We changed into our jeans and t-shirts and headed to the Walt Disney Theater for the 8:30 Golden Mickeys show...a "Disneyfied" version of the Academy Awards. Its 60 minutes of live song and dance combined with filmed segments. It includes songs from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocohantas, Mulan, the Little Mermaid, Toy Story, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmations, Lady and the Tramp and my favorite, Tarzan. I enjoyed the show so much that it seemed liked it was over in 5 minutes instead of 60.
The night was still young so we went to the adult club, WaveBands for the "Match Your Mate" game show at 10:00 with Cast Member Luke. This very similar to the old Newly Wed game show from TV. Two of the three couples were a little too honest with their answers. It made a for quite a few good laughs!
Next we hit the gift shop. Rob bought sunglasses and I bought a swim suit cover up. I looked for something for the kids, but nothing seemed just right.
