There seems to be a bit of information about the possibility of the treehouses being reopened and possibly being an extension to SSR. Info on this is on DVC news. I havent seen any reports of this anywhere else.
Anyone know anymore ?

Yes- basically the all the same stuff that you see on DVC news made the rounds on all of the boards. They have already started replacing the old units with the new prefab structures. It is just a waiting game to see what will happen with them- hoping they will become part of SSR or OKW.

What are the treehouses? a playground??

No, not a playground. They were a bunch of free standing small home/condo type structures built up on stilts (someone correct me on this part if I'm wrong), located hidden in the trees between OKW and SSR. They were most recently used to house international employees but during the course of the past year they were torn down and there is "speculation" that new villa/family style units will be going in. Rumors are that they will be DVC and linked to SSR.

Those are the basics. Someone else add on more info if you have time.

If they are going to be DCV at this point it would make sense that they would be and extension of SSR since no new DVC filings had been found (and they would not want to “give them away” at the OKW GV weekday point rate). As prefabs they could be ready by next spring so I cannot see the announcement being delayed much longer. Maybe it will coincide with the BLT announcement. I would assume they would be considered a SSR grand villa with the associated point requirements. I am thinking it would have a single point of bus pick up and would be an extra stop for the OKW bus (since the SSR busses are already overloaded and have a lot of stops already.)
If we do not hear an announcement by Oct, I would assume they would be CRO at least initially. I would not mind that since I am looking for CRO weekend reservation next June and they might be giving out some “bargains” to get the initial reservations filled.

Okay. ;)

The treehouses were octagonally-shaped units that were actually build on solid bases. The bases were just smaller than the upper floor. The upper floor had two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, a small kitchen and a wrap around deck. The base housed a bedroom and laundry room.

One of the bellmen at SSR told us they will be an extension of SSR. He said they will be marketed as "golf" villas. I will have to ask DH if he remembers more of the details of that conversation.

I doctored-up the map a little bit to better illustrate the layout. It can be found here:

Despite the fact that they do have 3 bedrooms, the treehouses wouldn't be Grand Villas. They appear to have a King Bed and two Queens, which would sleep a total of 6. Then you've got a sofabed in the living room and probably either the sleeper chair or murphy bed to bring it up to a max of 9 guests.

Even if these units were added to SSR, there is no obligation to adhere to existing point charts. I suspect they would be somewhere between the current Two Bedroom and Grand Villa levels.

This photo gives you a good view of the old treehouses...

Thanks tjkraz, I had seen people mention that once the point schedules were set that DVC could move points around but not add completely new classes with different point counts, even if they modified the resort (like adding a sleep chair to OKW and increasing the sleeping capacity to 5+1 of 9+1 and increasing the point requirement. I guess the difference must be that they are declaring completely new units to the resort.

If it is a DVC resort it will certainly be a unique configuration and I cannot wait to see the point requirements. If reasonable it might make the SSR points more desirable and support the resale price.

Interesting that the drawing does not even show the dotted lines for the pull out sofa

I had never opened up the site plan; I did not realize there were so many (52 by a quick count) I guess they would need more than 1 bus stop. I am not sure what they would do about the busses. I cannot imagine that hey would add that many more stops to the already less than optimal SSR bus system.

Thanks for the info.

We just stayed at SSR and there is a LOT of construction going on over in the Treehouse area. There are construction cranes in place and lots of activity.

I think there may be close to 60. Each SSR building has 44 Two Bedroom equivalents plus a couple of Grand Villas. When you figure the points are certain to be higher than a current 2B, I'd say this is roughly the equivalent of opening 1.75 to 2 more buildings at SSR.

I'll be curious to see how they position these building...assuming they are DVC.

IMO, if they were going to roll them into SSR, it would have made sense to make an announcement while active sales were still going on. Seems that would have provided some boost to SSR sales. Maybe they couldn't do that simply because details are still being worked out.

Making them a separate resort just doesn't make sense to me on sooooo many levels. First and foremost, who would want to buy into a resort that has exactly ONE unit size? I'm sure there are people who will love the treehouses, but are those folks going to be comfortable knowing the only unit they can book at 11 months is a higher-priced Two Bedroom?

I guess they would need more than 1 bus stop. I am not sure what they would do about the busses. I cannot imagine that hey would add that many more stops to the already less than optimal SSR bus system.

This permit lists two bus stops and a boat dock:

With so few rooms, they should be able to make the rounds pretty quickly. If there isn't anyone standing at the stop when the bus arrives--or obviously making their way to the stop--the bus should be able to depart immediately. Yeah, it's another diversion for the buses, but I don't think it would amount to more than 2-3 minutes of extra travel time.

We stayed in the Treehouses in the mid 80's. We loved it there and would go back, but we did have access to a Golf Cart for internal transportation and I think that would be an issue in the new world.
The original Treehouses were the largest accomodations on property at that time and a virtual pre-cursor to the Villas. They had 3 bedrooms (King, Queen and Double) and 2 full baths with a whirlpool in the Master. There was a full kitchen and eating area. They were the only accomodatations with a washer and dryer at that time. They also had a wonderful, peaceful setting with a nice round deck outside.
We loved our stay there.

lots of Marriott are only one size - generally a 2 or 3 bedrooms - it is only the newest that can be locked off.

this thing will be expensive - maintence fees will be high on it - so just as long as they do not include it with OKW - will be happy.

if they do - might be selling.

trying to a multi unit building up is hard enough - but all these single ones - expensive!!!

If the new treehouses are DVC, I'm pretty sure they would technically be part of SSR, not OKW, as the SSR property plat show the area to be part of the SSR lease. However, I think they will be separate Disney CRO resort, with trading available through the Disney collection. I think they will share maintenance and check-in with SSR, just like they shared with the Village resort and Disney Institute.

We stayed at the Treehouses about 8 years ago. They were wonderful and peaceful and an amazing unique Disney experience. Always wanted to do it again but then they became unavailable. It;s an awesome off the beaten path area, I hope they keep it that way!

I never stayed in them but always dreamed of staying in them. I hope they become a reality. :goodvibes

The golf cart was half the fun of staying there! We loved driving it back and forth to the "village". And at $10 a day (circa 1987), it was a super bargain.

I would love to stay there one day. If they end up being a part of SSR THAT WILL BE SWEET..since that is one of our home resorts. :thumbsup2
