With guest appearances from Terry and Sara
Terry and Sara have already been in Florida for a week staying in a villa off site.
We are off to stay at the Gatwick Hilton the night before we fly to Orlando. I start the day at work and a few hours in get a text from Lisa saying that Maurice was in bed with flu so not a good start. The kids come home from school and Lisa and her family come to pick Kirsty up as she and the suitcases can't all fit in Mark's car! It is just gone 5 pm
The next spot of trouble we encounter is the most awful traffic jams getting out of Barnet as the M25 is all clogged up. I am beginning to feel stressed as so wanted to be able to have a meal and cocktails as Giraffe after we do twilight check in and time is running out.
Luckily we get to the Hilton by 7 pm so have plenty of time. After check in the men get the cars parked and we meet them by the twilight check in desk. All goes smoothly and we are sipping our cocktails before we know it. The first as planned is a cosmopolitan
I order chicken quesadilla
We order more cocktails and are now in a great mood. We go back up to our room and open some wine. I am by now very excited
Maurice is coping well with his flu but is ready for bed. Me and Mark go down to the bar and have a couple more drinks before going to bed.
The next thing we all remember is being woken up by a very loud fire alarm. It is very early in the morning and the hotel is being evaculated. We all wait outside half dressed and are offered a foil blanket to keep us warm
Some people have nothing on their feet. I at least pulled on some clothes!
I am now panicing that we have not got our passports and may not be allowed back in the hotel and miss the plane!
Panic over as we are let in, just in time for us to go over into the airport. We go through security smoothly and notice that our flight has been delayed. We go for breakfast at Frankie and Benny and then do some duty free shopping. I buy two bottles of vodka and Lisa gets Baileys and Kahula. Kirsty gets me some purfume for mothers day.
As we now have plenty of time to spare we go for a drink in the wetherspoon pub
Eventually two and a half hours late we board our plane to take us to Orlando. I had a yummy beef pie and later a chicken sandwich. With about two hours to go we experience a bad bout of turbulance and the seat belt sign goes on. Worse is to come as when we approach Orlando airport we begin to circle round and round and round and round. Eventually the captain tells us there is a storm and the airport has been closed! He says that it is now open and will attempt a landing through the storm clouds. It is extremely bumpy and many passengers are being sick and some poor soul further down is having a panic attack. For what seemed ages we eventually land. We are all soooooo pleased to be on the ground!
Terry and Sara come and meet us and we go and hire a 15 seater van. (Here is a photo from later on)
We are meant to follow Terry and Sara to their villa but lose them immedately and we take quite a while to finally get to the villa. It is now about 9 and have enough time to order take away pizza to go with the lovely food Sara has cooked for us. The adults have a well earned drink before going to bed very tired. What a very strange first day.
