Of course, my DD tells me TODAY that she thinks she has a UTI & of course, the doctor's office is closed because it's a holiday. She said "now that she thinks of it, she may have been coming down with it last week"!!!!!!!!

Right now she is drinking cranberry juice & a lot of water. I thought I had previously read a threat about some over-the-counter treatment that may help until we get to the Dr., but I can't find the thread. :confused3

Anyone that could help?

Oh I know how that feels as last summer got a Kidney infection on a Sunday and ended up in the Dr's emergency clinic. In the US can you get anti biotics over the counter or do you need a Dr's prescription? Here we need a prescription for anti biotics and straight forward penicillin is best, if you are not allergic to it!

Claire ;)

She can take AZO (OTC) as a temporary pain reliever, but it will mess up her urinte test at the doctors.

I would take her to the urgent care or ER...I don't know how old she is, but I have had UTI's turn into kidney infections overnight - even requiring a hospital stay for one.

Now, I take antibiotics at the first sign of one and keep the purple pills on me at all times!

Good luck :-)

There is no OTC med that will help with the infection, only the discomfort.

Make sure she is drinking 100% pure cranberry juice (not the cocktail). You usually have to get this in the health food section. It is nasty. Tastes good with ginger ale though.

If I even think I could be getting an infection I get the cranberry capsules and take those, along with a lot of water. I've never actually gotten an infection and don't know if I am heading one off at the pass or wouldn't have gotten one, anyway.

If it is a uti, she will need an antibiotic but in the meantime, she can use Uristat which is over-the-counter and will greatly relieve any discomfort in the interim until she can see the dr.

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up taking her to the urgent care facility tonight around dinner time.

I had called her pediatrician to see if they could call in a script because they are recurring & I thought there was a slight chance they would. They wouldn't & the Dr. on call said to take her to the ER because the office was closed tomorrow anyway (this ticked me off actually).

I could have taken her to the gyno tomorrow because she is a patient there also but they never run on time & I really didn't want to wait overnight because she was in more discomfort as the day went on.

I will definitely write the names Uristate & AZO as a treatment for next time until we can see the Dr.
