OK, so Treasure Island in WDW has lain abandoned for quite some years now and everything is pretty much overgrown. Additionally, although for a while it was illuminated at night, it now lies dormant. FWIW, pretty much all of the old buildings and enclosures are still there, just as Disney left them when it abandoned the island.

It claims and has claimed recently that they are toying with the idea of reopening it under a new guise, different to that of Animal Kingdom which surpassed it. But nothing has happened.

What's the deal?

I believe you are talking about Discovery Island on Bay Lake (I think it was originally called Treasure Island). There was a water park there called River Country. There were a few issues, one being that River Country was afreshwater park and the potential for those amoebas became a thing. There is also the issue of aligators, as they are ever-present. There was a time when there weren't so many in central Florida, but conservation efforts helped their numbers greatly. There has been ocassional talk of putting a resort there, but nothing has come of it. A few years ago they discovered a man living there, and he was forced to vacate.

River Country wasn't on Discovery Island. River County was over by Fort Wilderness. Discovery Island was like a park - there was some animals and things there. It closed when Animal Kingdom opened.

Oh yeah - the waterpark was on the other side - right across from the island though, right?
