Treadmill Exercise Question

A little off topic.

Any one ever George Jetson on a mill? I have had two accidents on a mill. One running intervals where I was stepping on the sideboards while the mill slowed and then resumed at my recovery speed. I lost the remote for the tv (not that I was watching but for the noise) and stepped all the way off to pick it up. In the mean time I had failed to actually slow the mill. So as I planted my first foot on the belt slam bang off the back I went.

The other was on a Woodway treadmill. By far one of the best treadmills ever built due to the dozer track tread design. But they have one little nasty habit where the track does not always fall flat as it rolls back to the top...this leaves a small little bump. Normally not an issue unless you are tiring and not lifting your foot. I snagged a toe and again went flying off the back. Yikes.

I have never done a George Jetson off of the treadmill but I must admit that it is my biggest fear. If I ever need to do anything other than run, I pause the program and get it to stop. I don't trust straddling the belt or adjusting the speed manually. But, I have seen quite a few people injure themselves on the treadmill...mostly because they don't know how to use it. I just love when people don't know how to use the Interval program...the constant dropping then raising the speed using the up and down keys is just asking for trouble. So, I stop what I am doing and politely show them the interval key so that they stop annoying me. :lmao: Tied is the person that is on the treadmill holding the top, and kicking the front because they can't match the speed of the treadmill with their stride.

I do have to avoid watching or listening to comedies when I run though...they seem to raise the odds of me actually doing my first George Jetson. Laughing and running is not a good combination for me on the treadmill. But, I have more klutz moments running outside.

I've done most of my long runs on the treadmill due to childcare considerations (my eldestbhas lots of Saturday morning activities and I'm left with my 2 younger ones). I was very worried about how my treadmill runs would translate on race day but I did just fine. Our treadmill is in the basement and my kids keep me company. We usually watch Disney Junior or some equally stimulating children's movie. :rotfl2: I guess I've just gotten used to it. :confused3 my longest treadmill run - to date - was 11 miles. I'm not fast so that took about 2.5 hours.

BTW, what do people mean by 'my club'?

EMHDad - they mean the fitness club or gym where you are running your indoor laps. Assumption was you basement or garage was not large enough to do that.:rotfl:

I motivate myself for long runs or any runs on the treadmil at the Y becuase I can watch ESPN. (I don't have it at home). Longest run on the TM is 12 miles, right about 2 hrs. Weekday runs are on the TM in winter becuase it's dark when I go to work and dark when I get home.
