I use Priceline often for my hotel bookings. I decided to see how low I could go and still get a room. For a 1 star hotel, I bid $17 a night for the Memorial Day weekend 5/24/03 to 5/26/03. I got the Travelodge Hotel Maingate, 8600 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, Kissimmee. It was in Pricelines West Disney area.
When I first arrived, I had problems finding the front desk. I drove around and around the hotel and saw rows and rows of rooms. Finally, I found it. The front desk was detached from the rest of the hotel and shared a building with a restaurant (which I didnt eat at). I thought this was odd to have a front desk so far away from the rooms, but Im glad it was. There was a loud party at the restaurant. Women who dressed like hookers wandered around the building. I dare not think what kind of party it was. Ignorance is bliss!
The check-in was pretty painless. My room was pretty clean. The sheets and towels were clean. The room wasnt impeccable, though. The lights over the bed didnt turn on. I flipped the switch on and off several times until I checked for the lightblubs. None were there. Its a good thing I dont read by the bed. The sink had some small rust stains. The fire alarm kept on making a beep every five minutes. The air conditioning unit sounded like a rocket taking off. I kept the AC off as I slept. The alarm clock was on the dresser rather than the bedstand. Its hard to slap an alarm clock when you have to walk to do it!
The bathroom was pretty clean. The towels looked like rags I wipe my car with. The beds were clean too, but the pillows were paper-thin. When I put my head on the pillow, it sank so much that my head was touching the mattress. I had to use another pillow so I can have the thickness of a regular pillow.
The thing that bothered me the most was the search for ice. The room had an ice bucket, so I decided to put it to good use and fill it up. I walked around and around the hotel looking for the ice machine. It wasnt in the usual spot by the vending machines. It turned out the hotel had no ice machines! Why give me an ice bucket if I cant fill it with ice?
Memorial Day weekend seemed like a busy weekend, but the Travelodges parking lot was ¼ full. It seemed like plenty of rooms were available. I was expecting a full house that weekend.
You can eat at the McDonalds and 7-Eleven nearby. Next door was the Sleep Inn Maingate. Ive gotten rooms there on Priceline for $20 a night. Its also a 1 star hotel. As I drove by the Sleep Inn, I kept on thinking, For only three dollars more
For only three dollars more, I could have had a microwave and refrigerator.
For only three dollars more, I could have had a free continental buffet.
For only three dollars more, I could have had indoor corridors.
For only three dollars more, I could have had a nicer place.
I would have even been happy to stay at the Sleep Inn for $30 to $40. Im not so sure I would say the same for the Travelodge. I thought it was an OK hotel, but its nothing Id rush out and stay at again. I might even have a disgusted look on my face when I drive by this Travelodge in the future.
