I am trying to book air fare to bring my kids home for Christmas. I have never used Travelocity before but they are showing great rates with American and United but the kids will be traveling with a lap baby. Is there anything that I need to know or do when booking with travelocity?

Is there a reason you're not just booking directly with the airline? Often those 'great rates' disappear when you get to the actual payment page.

Now why didn't I think of that?! I went to American's website and I can book directly for the same price. Thanks for the suggestion.

Now my question is, If flying with a lap baby on American, is it free and do I have to call them and let them know that we are bringing baby with us? It doesn't give the option on the site, only for babies in a purchased seat.

You will need to bring proof of birthdate with you for any lap babies when you checkin at the airport. You will have to go to the counter and show them the proof. Lap babies fly free, but only up to a certain age.

From AA's site.
Infants are accepted two days after delivery, however, at least seven days is recommended.

Children under 5 years of age may not travel alone under any circumstances. Another passenger at least 16 years of age must accompany them. AA reserves the right to request documented proof of age for the adolescent accompanying a child under the age of 16.

Infants under 2 years of age who travel within the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands† may be held in an adult's lap at no charge. For transatlantic/transpacific travel or travel to/from Latin America, children under two years of age are required to have a ticket in their name for 10% of the applicable adult fare for the International portion. A 10% ticket does not entitle infants to their own seats. Contact Reservations for more details.

AA reserves the right to request documented proof of age for any traveler 2 years of age or younger. Please be prepared to provide documentation (birth certificate, passport, etc.) upon request.

For the safety of your child, American recommends purchasing a seat and using an approved child safety seat.

Children two years of age and older must travel in a purchased seat. See Seating Restrictions below for additional information.

Is there a reason you're not just booking directly with the airline?

Sites such as Travelocity are fine to check fares, but it's always better to book directly with the airline. If there are any problems, you have to deal with the online website rather than the airline and it can be a huge hassle.

I know I'm new here, but PLEASE consider buying a seat for your child and putting them in a carseat on the plane. It's far safer and more comfortable for everyone involved. All of the airlines, as well as the FAA and AAP, all recommend that everyone on a plane - regardless of age - be properly seated and securely belted.
