Hi all. I have been asked by my long time ANZAC Disboard buddies to write a TR for our recent Waikiki trip even though the only Disney part of it was the quick half an hour I spent at Aulani doing a site inspection. Apparently, since others are contemplating visiting Hawaii, my TR might be useful for some. I still have my doubts it belongs here but never-the-less I will do as I’ve been asked!:lmao:

Most of you know me already but, if you don’t, my family is made up of myself, DH, DD14, DD11 and DD8. We recently had wonderful and relaxing 17-night holiday in Waikiki. :yay:

We live in Wellington so our holiday began by flying up to Auckland on December 23rd to spend Christmas there with our extended family. Then we flew from Auckland to Honolulu on December 29th of course flying AustralianKaren’s kissy kissy Air New Zealand. I say “of course” because, until Hawaiian Airlines start flying here in March, Air NZ are, and have been for many years, our only choice to get direct from New Zealand to Hawaii.

On holiday with us for most of the time were my sister and her family including my brother-in-law, my nephew aged 15, my niece aged 12 and my nephew aged 8.

So it was lots of fun meeting up with them at Auckland Airport on the Saturday morning to board our flight and start our holiday. I had pre-seated us many months before and had got us seats in the first cabin. :thumbsup2 The seating configuration was 2-3-2 so we had five rows of two seats on the right side of the cabin. We sat in our family groups except for my DD11 and my DN12 who sat together and had heaps of fun. Air NZ was good as always but I do get disappointed at their choice of movies. They have heaps to choose from by few new releases and lots of old ones. Our children were thrilled to learn they could order drinks for themselves off the in-seat screen and certainly made good use of it – the poor crew! :rotfl: The 8.5 hour flight was a day time one so there was no pressure to sleep which I like since I don’t really sleep on planes. So it was like a relaxing day at the movies really (although I was onto TV programs about two thirds of the way through because I had run out of movies that I wanted to watch).

We landed into Honolulu at 8.15pm local time and the value of our forward seats proved themselves further as we were towards the front of the immigration queue which only had two immigration officers working and moved very slowly. By the time we got down to the baggage carousels, our bags were there so we were out onto street fairly quickly. I popped my T-Mobile Sim card into my phone and called the transfer operator to tell them we were ready. They advised us where to go and, as we walked around the corner, our family got a big surprise. My sister and I had secretly booked a stretch limo to pick the ten of us up and there was a big white stretched Hummer limo! :woohoo:

The Dads were pretty nonchalant of course but the children were pretty excited and even more so when the driver spent the ride recounting to them about all the famous stars that had previously ridden in his limo. I personally just enjoyed sitting back watching all the lights as we drove into Waikiki and feeling so happy to be back, after 20+ years, to the place I’d holidayed lots as a child and from where I had so many happy childhood memories.:cloud9:

Can't wait to see your TR :goodvibes

I'm also a fan of Hawaii although i've only done Honolulu, Maui would be fab...one day :p

Excellent! I haven't been to Hawaii in a while. Looking forward to my vicarious travel. Hummer-dinger of a start so far. :thumbsup2

For our first eight nights, we stayed at Ohana Waikiki West in a Kitchenette combo room. This was absolute peak and most expensive time of the year to stay in Waikiki and so I had to book the cheapest I could find. Of course, as a family of five, we cannot fit in most standard hotel rooms so our options were limited. The Kitchenette Combo was made up of two inter-connecting rooms and meant a spacious stay for us. I did not have extremely high expectations for the Ohana Waikiki West because it’s only a 3-star and gets mixed reviews on Trip Advisor but I was actually very pleasantly surprised. :thumbsup2

Rather than repeating it, here is what I wrote about it in my Trip Advisor Review:

“Good Value for money and a great location”

"We are a family of five who stayed at Ohana Waikiki West for 8 nights over the New Year period. We had a "Kitchenette Combo" on the 10th floor. This room arrangement was fantastic for our family as we had one regular hotel room with king bed connecting to a kitchenette room that had two double beds. This gave us two bathrooms, two T.V.s, two balconies, lots of storage and of course the kitchenette. Yes, the rooms are dated and the bathrooms, in particular, are in need of renovation but housekeeping does their very best to keep them clean and tidy. Yes, three lifts are certainly not really enough to service a big hotel like that but the wait for one was never too long and, being on the 10th floor, we could take the stairs (especially going down!) if we were in a hurry. We were really pleased with the location and its a great base for Waikiki. We knew we were a couple of blocks back from the beach but, at this part of Waikiki, the blocks are quite short and so the walk to the beach was not long at all. Plus one way to get there was to cross the road from the hotel and walk through the International Market which is always interesting (so sad if they do demolish it). The pool area was good although the pool was very cold, not that it stopped our children from swimming in it! We were on a budget for eating so it was so convenient to have the Food Pantry grocery store just over the side street, Denny's directly over the road, Chillis in the hotel, Starbucks and Subway next to the hotel, one of the top-rated noodle bars just one block over and KFC & Burger King just one block over the other way. Complimentary rides on the Pink Trolley were included as part of our room rate which we used several times to get to and from Ala Moana shopping centre so that was a good savings for us. It was good to have free WiFi in the lobby and lets hope that, in their planned renovations, they install free WiFi in rooms too as all hotels should have these days. So, all in all, we had a good stay and I can recommend the Ohana Waikiki West. "

After checking in and sussing out our rooms, we were feeling a bit hungry so we ventured out and got Subway to take back to our rooms. Then it was into bed and to sleep.

I'm reading along TravelMum. I love your descriptive trip reports, always great to read :thumbsup2

Oh, how fun, Hawaii! I'd love to go there one day (so far the closest I've been is a 4 hr stopover at Honolulu airport, when I was 10!). I will be reading this with interest :)

The next morning we slept in and, once we woke up, we decided to go over the road to Denny’s for breakfast. I had planned to do breakfasts in the room for most of the holiday to save $$ but we figured we’d start out our holiday with a gold ole American breakfast at Denny’s. However, once we got over there, we realised lots of others had the same idea and there was about an hours wait for a table! :scared1: So, change of plans and we went back across the road to The Food Pantry where there are vendors selling food as well as a supermarket. The girls and I each got a fruit smoothie and a donut while DH got a bagel and coffee. We took them back to our room and ate on our balconies.

Now, before I go any further, I must explain that the main idea of this holiday was to be a relaxing one. The last big family holiday we’d had was our Orlando one where I had pre-planned every day for us and, which while was very fun, was somewhat exhausting. So, although it went against the grain for me, the natural-born-travel-planner, I deliberately left the majority of days free. Therefore, when it came to deciding what to do on our first day, I thought I’d leave it to DH to choose. He said he thought we should get our bearings of Waikiki. I presumed he meant to walk around the streets. Not so though because he meant taking a ride on the Pink Trolley Bus (which was included as part of our room rate) as that does a route that goes round the main streets of Waikiki. I asked him if he realised that, while it did indeed do that route, it ends up at Ala Moana (a massive outdoor shopping centre)? Yes, he knew and felt that was a good way to start our holiday. My DH is not really a shopper so I was quite surprised and would never have guessed we’d be going to Ala Moana on our very first day! :lmao:

The Pink Trolley

So along we went on the Pink Trolley to Ala Moana where joined thousands of other tourists and locals shopping on a busy Saturday. Today was just for looking and getting an idea of prices but I must admit it did feel sooo good to be back in U.S.A. retail land! Hello again to you GAP, Macy’s, Victoria’s Secret, Juicy Coutere (from DD14’s list), Gymboree, Apple, Banana Republic, Vans, Sketchers, Old Navy, Lego, Forever 21, Bebo etc!! :rotfl: We wondered around walking past and looking in the stores. Of course we had to pay a visit to the Disney store and I’m not even really sure why (because it’s probably only DD8 and maybe DD11 who would want to buy anything there) but my girls and I seemed to be drawn in like magnets through those doors…. We decided to have a late lunch in the food court and, oh my gosh, what a mission that was! It is huge yet was packed with people and it took ages to find a table. Of course, once we had the table, everyone needed to go off to get their food but, as we always had to leave a couple of us minding the table and because everyone wanted something different, this late lunch took a long time!!!

Lunch in the Ala Moana Food Court
Alamoanafoodcourt_zpsdb7a4cb0.jpg

Late afternoon we caught the Pink Trolley back to the hotel. The girls went up to the rooms while DH and I went across and did a grocery shop at The Food Pantry. Note that grocery prices are quite expensive in Honolulu compared to the mainland and, when converted, not that dissimilar to New Zealand prices.

Loving it. Oh I love the orange chicken at Panda Express. My food court staple.

On our second day we did go to the beach which is what I had expected we would have done, and what my sister and her family did, on our first day! We packed up our beach bags and the girl’s boogie boards and made our way across the road, through the International Market, across Kalakaua Ave the main drag), though the beach walkway next to the Sheraton Moana Surfrider and onto Waikiki Beach. We found a spot to sit amongst the throngs of people and the girls immediately hit the water. Waikiki beach is always crazy busy but I find it a great people watching place because there is always so much going on! I never swim at beach here in New Zealand because I find the water far too cold so you’ll only find me in sea water in tropical places like Fiji, Thailand, the Caribbean etc plus I did go in for a few dips while in Hawaii. Even though it was winter in Hawaii, the water was a lovely temperature.

That night we went out to dinner with my my sister and her family. Finding somewhere that could take a party of 10 was tricky. At 6pm, The Cheesecake Factory had a 3 hour wait if we'd have wanted to wait for a table there so we passed on that (and I never did end up going). We ended up waiting about 45 minutes for a table at California Pizza Kitchen which turned out to be worth the wait as it was very nice and reasonably priced meal.

Thanks for your encouragement everyone and, as with when I started to do my Orlando TR, I am finding this a good way to get through the post-holiday blues.

Great updates and I love the pictures on Waikiki.

The Californian Pizza Kitchen has a branch near the Cheesecake Factory in Silicon Valley. Both are not as busy as in Waikiki so the CPK always loses out. But it used to be a firm favourite for DH and myself to visit.

Yes....totally agree with your last statement. Keep churning out the TR as a means of getting over the post Trip blues. I, for one, am happy to read along. :thumbsup2

Looking forward to hearing all about it.

I've been to Hawaii once, back in about 1998 I think. Loved it, but have now found Disneyland, but can't afford to have a stopover in Hawaii on the way home!

Looking forward to reading about where your relaxed approach takes you next. Love that your DH knowingly steered you towards the shopping centre! That would never happen to me!

Really enjoying thenTR so far! I think we'll be going to Hawaii next year so I am taking notes looking forward to the next update :)

I’m not going to make this a daily TR because, as I said, this was mainly a relaxing holiday and most days were spent doing a mixture of going to the beach, going to the pool, browsing the shops in Waikiki (including several visits to the Waikiki Ross store), going to Ala Moana, meandering through the International Market, popping into one of the many ABC stores for bits & pieces plus, for me, lots of reading my holiday books. Also, we ended up letting our girls use their technology pretty much as often as they wanted on this holiday (each has IPods and DD14 had her netbook) since the hotel had free internet and basically because it made it more relaxing for DH and me!:lmao: So an example of a day might have been a leisurely wake up in the morning, breakfast in the room, over to the beach for a few hours in the morning, back via a fast food place for lunch, a few hours back at the hotel with me relaxing on the bed or balcony reading a book (such a luxury for me ), DH lying on the bed watching a movie on his IPAD, DD14 and DD11 on Facebook and DD8 watching TV. Then probably there would be an afternoon swim in the hotel pool for the girls (with me lying by the pool reading my book) and in the evening we’d go out to dinner somewhere in Waikiki enjoying the lights, sounds and hustle/bustle as we walked there and back. Also, we’d most likely duck into a couple of shops on our way back as they are open late.

I’ll jump ahead to our first rental car day next but I will mention New Years Eve. That night we went out for dinner and then decided we’d wander through the DFS store. It is a flagship store located on the main road, Kalakaua Ave. I think we went in looking for a camera but, although we went up and up and round and round the various levels, we never found cameras and I don’t think they even stock them. What they do stock is masses of high end brands of watches, sunglasses, cosmetics, perfumes, bags, jewellery etc. It is absolutely huge and it totally catered towards the Japanese tourists. All the staff seemed to be Japanese and all the other customers seemed to be Japanese. We thought it was funny because we felt like we were in Japan! :rotfl2: So we left without buying anything but it certainly was an impressive place and one of the kind saleswomen gave each of my girls a New Years Eve party head piece. That was handy for them as we continued to walk around the streets which were full of New Years Eve revellers, many wearing festive gear like my girls now were. We had earlier asked the girls if they wanted to stay up to midnight and watch the fireworks on the beach which of course they wanted to. So had I wanted to but it was only about 9.30pm by this time and it seemed a long wait until midnight. So we went back to the hotel and the girls watched TV in their rooms while DH and I had a little nap! It has been years since we’ve stayed up until midnight to celebrate New Year’s so it was late for little old us.:rotfl: At about 11.30pm, we left the hotel and walked to the beach where we joined thousands of others waiting for the fireworks. There was a large countdown clock illuminated on the side of the Outrigger Waikiki and a couple of minutes before midnight a person abseiled down the building. Then at midnight the fireworks in the harbour began and they were very good. Not as incredible as fireworks a Disney castle of course but impressive none-the-less. It was a very happy and festive atmosphere at the beach and it felt so good to be in Hawaii as 2013 began knowing we still had two more weeks of holiday ahead of us.:thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 - thanks for your trip report.

We are heading to Hawaii for Xmas this year and staying at Ohana Wakiki West and also doing a cruise on Pride of American around the islands.

That is so my kind of holiday. How wonderful to be able to do what you want, when you want without any hurry.
Also I love the idea of having a bit of a nap before strolling down to the beach for New Years Eve fireworks. Wish I coud do this at home!!

Sounds like you had a great time! It's been years since I was in Honolulu - I would love to have a trip back. Maybe sometime soon!!
Waiting to hear more! :surfweb:

What a wonderful way to celebrate NYE! Your holiday sounds so relaxing :)

sounds like a great way to spend the holidays.

we are thinking of hawaii for xmas and new years this year as well:goodvibes

What were the crowds like generally, we are used to travelling during quiet seasons. Usually we never travel over xmas due to crowds etc.

Was the weather ok? I read that it was pretty rainy in January this year.

we love CPK, very well priced and always consistantly delicious.
