My parents were both recently diagnosed with diabetes. Neither is bad enough to need the insulin shots yet (thank goodness), but my dad is on the sugar regulating pill (not sure of the name). My mom is on diet-control only.

My mom can't have nutrasweet either but is just fine with either Splenda or Sweet N Low. She also can't have any milk products.

We're only going to be there for 2 days and have reservations at:

Plaza Restaurant, where mom intends to get the strawberry and chicken salad, no cheese. Dad said he could get something without a problem. Will the dressing be a problem?

1900 Park Fare (dinner)

Boma's (breakfast) -- mom and dad both said the omelettes and fruit would work.

Jiko's (dinner)

Other than that salad, we won't know what they want to eat until we arrive and see the menu for that night/morning. Should I still call the restaurants ahead of time and ask what they have that caters to diabetics or something, or if there are any menu items they should avoid? This is the first time we've had to worry about something like this.

They should both take their Bloodsugar testing supplys!! All the walking, heat, not drinking enough water,at WDW caused me to have major low bloodsugars episodes!! So, I can eat more. And eat a few no no's because I NEED to raise my blood sugar.

Have each of them carry Glucose tablets. These raise bloodsugar very very quickly!
Have them carry the little tubes of GEL frosting to help raise really low bloodsugar
Have them carry a 4x5 card with their Dr.'s instructions on how to treat each of their low bloodsugars AND their high bloodsugars. This is so anyone can help them.

The First Aide stations are great!! They will help you with anything you need,a bathroom,to rest,to cool off,a drink water or Orange juice.
And it is the only place you can get Minnie Mouse Nurse stickers!!

You can call ahead now to the restaurants and the chefs will help to get meals both your parents meals they can feel good about!!

I too, have diabetes, and it's a b*tch!

Make sure they carry glucose tablets (I like grape) and test daily
if not more often. Keep hydrated. Wear THICK preferably diabetic
socks (to prevent foot damage) and check often for blisters/cuts!

I would definately call all the resteraunts ahead. I know the consierge at CR called me a week before our stay and asked if we
needed anything. I told him we needed ONLY diet beverages in the freebie fridge b/c I am diabetic. He noted it on our reservation!

Since so many elderly and ill people visit Disney, I think they are
used to being particularly nice to all of us.
