My dd was prescribed Amoxicillin this week and we are leaving for WDW on Thursday. She will still have 3 days left on it when we leave, so we have to bring it with us. Does anyone know about carrying prescription liquid meds on board? She won't need it on board, but I hate to pack it in my suitcase. It also has to be refrigerated, so I am in a bind. I will have to pack it in an insulated bag with cool packs, I guess. Does anyone have any ideas or tips on what worked for them, or info on airport security for prescribed meds? Thanks!!

I say to contact the airline you are flying with. I know if you bring liquid on with your carry-on you have to drink some of it infront of them, and since you can't do that, I would guess you would have to put it in your suitcase. DH is a pharmacist, and he says that the ice pack theory is just fine as long as its not to long. So if the airline doesn't have any good answers for you, I'd just put it in your suitcase in a large plastic bag with a lot of ice packs and pray that it doesn't burst!

As long as it's in the orginal bottle it shouldn't be a problem. I've traveled w/prescription meds & ice packs. Just be sure to pull it out and tell them it's prescription.

Here's a link to the Transportation Security Administration page that covers travel with medication.
You don't need to drink any of it. If it's small enough to fit in the bag with your other liquids, you can put it there. I travel with a nasal inhaler and just put it in with my other liquids. If it's more than 3 ounces or you are going to have it in a bag with a cool pack, just keep those separate from your other items going thru screening. Point them out to the screeners before putting them in the xray machine.

Also, check with the pharmacist whether it is necessary for Amoxicillin to be stored in the refrigerator or just preferred for it to be stored there. I believe it is preferred to store it there, but can be stored at cool room temperature. If that's the case, you would not need a cool pack. An insulated bag would do the trick.
I know it has to be protected from freezing, so if you use a cool pack for it, you want to insulate it a little so it's not sitting right on the frozen cool pack. Also, people have posted in the past that that their medication got frozen in the little room refrigerators in the room. The refrigerator got turned up high to cool it quickly and it cooled too well.

I am pharm technician and you should be able to go to your pharmacy and get an empty bottle in the size that will be acceptable (I think less than 3 ounces) and the pharmacy should be able to label the bottle for you. You can pour the remaining amount into the bottles and carry on the airplane. Also, According to the express scriupts drug digest, "After amoxicillin suspension or drops are prepared by your pharmacist, it is best to store it in a refrigerator between 2—8 degrees C (36—46 degrees F). However, it can be stored at room temperature if refrigeration is not available. Throw away unused suspension or drops after 14 days. Do not freeze.". Hope this helps! Have fun!

I have always heard that it doesn't have to be refrigerated. As long as it's room temperature, and not exposed to excessive heat that it should be fine. This is from an article that I found...--Amoxicillin is available in generic in most strengths. The suspension does not have to be refrigerated, but tastes better cold and can be given with or without food. Amoxicillin is good for 14 days once it is mixed. -- I have refrigerated mine, but this is just my 2 cents.

I worked for Delta for years AND Im a flying single mom. Ive flown with my daughter many times, at 18 months she had over 10,000 airmiles, and we are flying down to Orlando in a few weeks. Anyway, you can fly with medication, there will be no problem. As long as everything is in a prescription labeled bottle, and in the ziploc bag, you'll be fine. Just make sure you pack it in an insulated bag with a cold pack. I flew from Atlanta to Vegas many times, while my daughter had an ear infection each time, and she was on liquid antibiotics. You'll be fine. But, there are pharmacies everywhere you go. Just make sure your pharmacy is one that is on a mainframe, like Walgreens...they will easily be able to retrieve your prescription with out making calls and Walgreens are everywhere in Florida. If your meds spoil, then you can always go get an emergency refill, however room temperature is ok as long as it is not exposed to excessive heat, so dont leave it in the car. (I was a Pharm Tech too.) Most suspensions dont have to be kept in a 'fridge, its just better tasting when cold and not as bitter.

However...medications MUST have the prescription label attached to it, so if you go to the pharmacy for a smaller bottle *which is not necessary since it is medication* make sure a proper label is attached.

TSA may have a problem with an ice pack (they shouldn't since it is being used for a prescription medication, but you never know) but a bag of frozen veggies works just as well and is absolutely allowed through security.

I had just had knee surgery a month before I flew to Disney April 2007 & they took my ice pack!

Bring a ziplock baggie of ice instead of your expensive ice packs (pack those in your checked luggage). That way if they take it, you won't be out much.

As a safety measure, why not ask your doctor for an extra script to be filled IN Orlando--- just in case??

Gel ice packs are a no no. If you put your meds into a ziploc and then an insulated pack just before you leave home, and maybe put in a small bag of frozen veggies, you should be fine. Make sure it's in the pharmacy's bottle with all the lables on it and they shouldn't take it from you.

We had this exact issue a few months ago and it was NO PROBLEM! No worries... just bring the meds in the original packaging and take it out BEFORE you go through security. I put it in the clear plastic bag with my other liquids under 3 ounces. After security I put into a lunch bag with ice pack to keep it cold. I did not want to check it because I was afraid of losing the bag. I wanted it with us and it all worked out.

Thank you so much, everyone, for your very knowledgeable input! I got lots of great tips and info from all of you!
