Met DSs 5th grd teachers last night at parent conferences. Spoke about missing his schoolwork during the 5days he's absent. Both teachers said "Travelling is such a great opportunity. He will not need to make up the school work. If there is a test he will need to make that up and we will help him. We would like him to keep a travel journal though." They had known we are going to St Marten/St Thomas but last night I finally told them we are travelling with Mickey and also visiting Castaway Cay! What a relief.
(may also help that DS is a honor student)

My daughters Kindergarten teacher said the same thing last week at our parent teacher conference.
They will be giving her a journal and she's to draw a picture everyday of something she did or saw.

I would be relieved too! Schools are getting so strict these days! :(

I think a jounal would be so much fun to do - you could make it like a scrapbook with writing, drawings, and stuf like things cut out from the navigators.

Awesome!
Thats the way it was when we were taken out of Catholic school years ago to go to WDW, and I totally agree with that attitude. ;)
Things seem to be going great for you this week!

I love that idea! I think any child would like to do that..not just for homework, but to have as a keepsake.

A friend of mine just went to one of those parties where they show you how to make a scapbook. The materials they sell to do it can get pretty pricey (a starter package was over 100.00).
I think I may go to Hobby Lobby and pick up some stencils fabric remnants, sticker, colored paper ect.... for me..I mean my daughter, to play with ;-)

When we took dd out of 1st grade last year to cruise we had her write in a journal each day. She had to report the weather, where we were, the knots the ship were traveling. She also had to try a new food everyday - ended up loving Mangos and is a freak for them now. Also, when we were in St. Maarten/St. Thomas, she picked up a brochure about the islands for her journal. We also gave her a couple of throw away cameras, so when we came back she made her journal complete with pictures (from her point of view), and shared it with the class when she got back.

Just got a response from my DD7's 2nd grade teacher and principal that the 4 days she will miss is considered an educational experience and therefore will be counted as excused absences. She doesn't have to make up the work missed but I requested it anyway and will make her do it so she doesn't miss out on anything. They did request she keep a journal to share with the class and also that it makes a great keepsake for them in years to come.

Last year while on the Magic my DD made a journal. It wasn't required by the staff at Montessori for Kindergarden. I just thought it would make a great keepsake. This year in 1st grade the teacher provides the journal for the cruise. DD had a great time drawing pictures and writing about the trip. Phonetics crack me up but again it's a great keepsake!!

great idea about the camera - DS has his own underwater (thank you Michelle) but I may need to get him his own disposable. Maybe I can wrap it in Christmas paper and give it to him on the airplane

Love That Mouse, Love that trying a new food everyday! There are so many interesting things to learn via Disney. On one trip my son went to the Millenia booths at WDW and learned interesting things from the lovely CMs there. Everyone, have your kids check out some of the talks. There was an interesting one on the stage productions, great for kids interested in theater. There are plenty of opportunities for creative, educational reports. But do homework first thing before leaving your cabin in the mornings! Just too much to do otherwise. Order room service rolls and juice, then do the homework! Then play!

Last year DD's 2nd grade teacher had her do some extra assignments while she was out of school(4days). She had to write about a bird native to the carribean, do a weather chart and compare the weather down there to at home, and something else that I can't remember. She did keep a journal too.

Her 3rd grade teacher this year didn't ask her to do anything extra because she was only missing one day and they were going on a field trip that day anyway. She did let her go on the field trip with one of the other 3rd grade classes on a different day though! Her teacher just asked her to bring back postcards from wherever we went. She collects them.:D

All 5 of the kids we took out of school (for 6 days) were not asked to do any school work. No make up work either. Just a journal which we are STILL working on in scrapbook form. It was awesome! My son just brought home a test and questions on the experiment they did while he was away wasn't counted on his!

We took 2 grade 5 boys, 1 grade 1 girl, 1 kindergarten girl and 1 preschool girl.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!

We have 4 children (15, 13, 11, 7) and they will be out of school for a total of 6 days. The requirement is that they have to have all work done BEFORE they leave. All tests taken, etc... If a teacher isn't ready with the work then that is the only exception! Im guessing this is because their school is considered college prep.

Doing the homework scramble...

Jodie

I forgot another thing - the teacher did give me some worksheets for dd to do if she wanted to, so on the plane ride down we did the sheets. It kept her occupied and the work got done. I just may be lucky because she loves homework (doubt she will say that once she gets older :)).

We usually did the journaling about the previous day at breakfast. She loves looking at it now and yes, the spelling was cute.
