Travelling from the Maritimes

I know I am not the only one in this area of the country that is frustrated by the constant deals or other options available to those in major centres.

I keep watching the flight costs for May 2007, and just about every carrier costs close to $750 (on average) per person - all costs in. The one big exception seems to be Delta at $450pp (scares me a bit given their history) but those go through Boston on a small plane that I'm not convinced my DW will fly in.

Anyone else tired of this problem for us East Coasters?

Are there other options that I am missing (like the old Buffalo rather than Pearson trick available to our friends in T.O.)?

We're taking the CAT ferry from Yarmouth to Maine tomorrow and flying from Portland. We got plane tickets for $250 CAD taxes incl. from Portland. Even when you added on the price of the ferry we're still saving over flying from Halifax.

...and we're driving to Portland for our Christmas trip.

Wish the Cat was sailing in December!! LOL!

$1200 for the 6 of us - even factoring in driving costs, overnight in Portland (which we would have to do in YHZ anyway) just can't compare to the $$$$$$$ that AC and Westjet wanted for our time frame.

Bangor was just a little more expensive, but an extra hour in the car to grab Jetblue seemed worth it

I remember our Oct.04 trip was $390Cdn return from Halifax on AC. I wonder what's changed! If it wasn't for Avion+Aeroplan we wouldn't be able to afford flying down. It's just stupid the prices of things. Continental through Newark seems like a fabulous idea and saves a few hundred bucks. I'm going to try to book Halifax->Washington->Orlando on AC for our next trip. Just over 5 hours with connections and we clear customs in Halifax.

I am watching Southwest from New Hampshire. It's about a 10 hr drive, and we're going in January (eek!) but dh loves to drive and this is his way to get a roadtrip while I get to book into one hotel and stay there once we get to Fl! We drove to Boston in July 05 and it wasn't nearly as bad as we expected. (Remember the Halifax airport "upgrade" debacle? We were scheduled to fly, but--surprise--there was bad weather in Halifax--gasp!--and we switched plans at the last moment.) He is totally ok with taking another couple of vacation days to get a deal, though not everyone would...If I can hold it together long enough to get a good "ding", we could go for under $500 US for all 4 of us. We figure the gas, food, and extra lodging to get to NH adds around $600, which is still better than $2600-3000 on the Cdn carriers. However, I will also be watching for seat sales and special promotions from Halifax. Hoping that the new preclearance option might spark a promo fare on a new direct-to-US flight.

I will go and check out the options others mentioned in this thread, though!!

And yes, it totally frustrates me to see the deals others get, especially if you spend time on any of the primarily American boards. "My fare cost us a whole $112, which I thought shocking, but I managed to get a deal for $7 per person!" (I jest. Sort of.)

Watching for specials from YHZ also. Prices are crazy from here. You would think with all of the people travelling out of here they could offer better deals. Right now there isn't one direct flight to FL. WE are looking for April/2007. Driving to the US may be less, but it means taking more vacation days and the stress of worring about stormy weather. Still keep hoping for some good sales.

It frustrates me to no end that I can't find a flight for next May for a half decent price. To have to pay $1300 to $1400 for my son and I to fly to Orlando is crazy. If my husband came with us (he's not into Disney so it is just the two of us) I would consider driving to the US and catching a flight from there but it is not something I want to do alone. I guess all we can do is wait and see if something comes up. I'm hoping something will around late November or early December when the current promotion is almost over - the one that you have to fly before Dec. 15th. If you find a seat sale, let us know please.
