Hi There
have noticed people saying travellers cheques are not widely accepted in Orlando.(wallmart pops up) When we went in 2009 we had no problems anywhere-malls and WDW. Is this still the case?. i do not like the idea of using a card as i like to keep a close eye on our spending.(a set lot for me,hubby, taxis, food ect). has anyone used them at the malls and shops in the last few months.thanks

I have had the same concerns(I am going in Sept/Oct) . I emailed the Orlando tourist office who said there is no problem at all. Almost everywhere will accept them as cash they say with a couple of exceptions namely Walmart and Golden Corral. When I spoke to a travel agent recently he said a lot of agencies are just trying to promote their cash cards. Although they will eventually be phased out in much the same way as cheques here are disappearing but it will take many years . So.........I got travellers cheques.

We had quite a few problems with cashing travelers cheques as many places have stooped acepting them ( alot of resturants) , last year we heard there was a big problem with fruadlent cheques going around so many places would not take them . We have a place in florida and we asked our managment to ask around to see if this was the case and she confrimed it . Not sure if this is still the same but thought I would share my information and experience .

Having heard what Wildwood posted I have always paid with cash or a card offsite. I have used TC's at two locations in the Premium Mall: One was Gymboree, where they said they would take one with photo ID, but would prefer if I paid by another means. The other place I have always used them is the Disey outlet (I get confused and never remember which is which, but the one in the Premium Mall). They have never had a problem with them.

We have always used Travellers Cheques and never had a problem. Only once, (at a Publix Supermarket), have I even been asked for ID. We were planning to use TC's this year, so I am surprised to hear that some of you have had problems

I haven't had problems with them and certainly everywhere at Disney will both accept them and cash them without question. But having heard that they are not as widely accepted, I tend not to use them outside of Disney. I still prefer them to taking cash as my currency and don't like to put all my funds into one card so I will be taking TCs again this year.

Phew!!! That's a relief! I thought the tourist office must have the most up to date and accurate info and unlike the travel agents, it is not to their advantage to promote one form of payment over another. It's still a releif to hear other travellers reporting no problems though. Presumably hotels will cash them anyway?

I have only ever stayed onsite so I can't comment on offsite hotels. I would imagine most, or at least many, do accept them and will change them. I have never had a problem at Disney. I would often take a $100 TC into the resort gift shop in the morning and purchase something small, like a tin of mints for example, or a yogurt in the foodcourt and then have all the change as my cash. I don't like carrying cash around on me and last year I did have a FairFX card which I will be taking again this year, but prior to that I only took TCs and kept my UK bank cards and credit cards in the safe as back up. Realistically, people are more likely to report on places not accepting them than the many places that do, and that is probably what you are hearing about.

Thanks for everyones info. I think i will still get the TC's. I always photo copy my passport and use that for id but i think this time i might just bring my driving license.:thumbsup2

I took travellers cheques on our last trip in October last year and had no problems in any of the places we went to.

As a DVC member we always stay onsite and Disney resorts are happy to cash $200 per room per day. In addition to this you can also use say a $100 cheque to purchase something small in the shop and get the change in cash.

Apart from the occassional trip to Walmart we spend most of the day times in the parks or water parks (we're not big shoppers so dont tend to visit the malls). When we went all the parks we visited cashed TC's. (We visited US, IOA, Busch and Seaworld).

If we knew we were going offsite to a restaurant i just cashed a TC at the front desk before going.
