Traveling with sharps?

Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot. But I thought perhaps you may be the most likely to know the answer.

I was recently prescribed medication via self injection twice daily. And I have a trip to WDW scheduled in 6 weeks. I only need to inject upon waking and in the evening, so there's no need to actually take the syringes with me into the Parks or anywhere else I travel during the day. I'll just need them in the hotel room. But, how do I get them down there? We're flying, so, can I just place them in my checked baggage? And then I guess I'll need a sharps disposal canister to take with me too?

Thanks for your help! This is all new to me.

I would highly suggest bringing the medication and enough syringes to get you through at least 2-3 days in your carry-on. You just never know what may happen and you don't want to get stuck without the medication. You can bring the syringes through TSA; you just need to declare them when you go through security.

This. Just make sure that the medicine is in the original labeled container; for example, if you have a bottle you draw up doses in, don't pre-draw them and bring loaded syringes on board. If they're the auto-injector style pens, make sure the original label is still on them.

The hotel will be able to provide you with a sharps box; if for some reason they can't, First Aid inside the parks can dispose of them for you, bringing them into the park wouldn't be a problem.

I remember the first time I requested a sharps container from a Disney resort - I was kind of disappointed that it was just the same, plain old red container like I had at home. I was expecting something whimsical with a pair of mouse ears on it, that giggled when you popped a spent syringe in its grinning mouth!

Even easier than a sharps container is a needle clipper that is easy to carry with you. You just clip off the needle and it remains in the clipper. Then recap syringe and throw it in the trash.

I agree with previous poster that you should keep your meds with you in carryon bag. My husband takes all of his meds with him in the carry-on. Some meds need to be kept at room temp and it could be a huge pain if they lost your luggage containing your medication.

I think I have seen the sharps containers in some of the bathrooms in the parks if you needed.

We always feel better having all of our medication on hand.

I go every every year for two weeks to WDW. I carry all my medications (portioned out in those weekly pill boxes (4-5 of them) in my carry-on bag, including insulin pens with frozen gel packs and sharps. I put my bag on the conveyor at TSA and have never been questioned or had TSA inspect them.

For the room, I use a small cosmetic bag to store the used sharps (mine have caps you can put on them) and I carry them back home and put in my red container.

But, yeah, I'd never put prescription medications or supplies in checked luggage. Luggage can get lost, nobody likes an emergency trip to the pharmacy, and insurance companies generally don't cover lost stuff.

I often go down for 6 weeks and take the pen needles and insulin in a bag that fits under the seat as my dh's personal bag. It gives me peace of mind.

Thank you!

I didn't even think about bringing the syringes as carry-on. I just assumed that TSA would not allow that. But, yes, I should definitely bring them with me instead of checking!

And thank you for the idea of the needle clipper. I will look into that.

And I'll bring my own Mickey stickers to decorate the disposal container!
