Ok folks, the rules on what you can carry on and what can be in your checked luggage change so fast I'm hoping someone out there can help me. I checked the airline and TSA sites without much help.

We're traveling to California next week to spend 8 days at my brother and family's home. I already shipped out my power sort box with a 32 page layout ready to go and included much of the paper, etc in that.

As I'm getting ready to pack I'm trying to figure out the best way to pack my tools and which tools I can actually take! My thought was to take an extra 12 x12 clear paper "envelope" and put everything together on the top layer. In addition to some papers I just picked up I plan to put in some templates (plastic shouldn't be a problem), a Fiskar type 12 inch straight cutter (will that be a problem because of the blade?), a couple pair of edging scissors, and the thing I'm most concerned about my really good tiny point scissors for fine cut out work....

Anyone know if any of this is restricted in checked luggage?

Thanks!
Deb

Deb - I don't think anything is really restricted from checked luggage. (OK, nothing that will explode or anything). It's only the carry ons that really have the restrictions. When I mayde my emergence trip to FL in Feb, they hand checked my luggage. I freaked everytime they found something sharp in my bag (safety pins, scissors, etc.). They looked at me funny and then my DH would remind me that the checked luggage was OK. (So my brain was not really there at teh thime). I know it's not the latest info, but something as typical as scissors ahould not eb a problem for checked luggage.

Have a great trip!

I know the scissors would be checked baggage only. I would also back anything with a blade into the checked luggage. When I went to FL in Sept, I had a travel-folding pair of scissors in my carry on and they took them, I did have a choice of finding my luggage and adding it to it, but we had done curb side checkin. I just said to toss them.

Thanks all! I know none of those things can go in the carry on (and didn't want to carry it anyway!) but the list of what you can and can't put in checked baggage wasn't found at either of the sites. Should be good to go then!

Deb, Last I heard you cannot have anything at all such as scissors, cutting blades, pins, crochet or knitting needles, etc in your carry on luggage. You CAN carry them in your checked luggage w/o any problem. Also don't forget if you're carrying film/camera, make sure you take it in your carry on luggage. The new security cameras and x-ray machines they have now will totally wipe your film out if goes through checked luggage. The security cameras we walk through aren't as strong and shouldn't bother them. I've flown 5 or 6 times since 9/11 and have never had a problem when I carry my film on the plane w/me. I have also handed the security personnel my SEALED boxes of film and asked them to manually check them. In Nashville they don't mind doing that but at other airports they give me a funny look and tell me to run it through the x-ray machines. Ft Lauderdale is really strict. I don't mind. The security is awesome. Would rather take a few extra mins and be assured all is ok. Hope this info helps. It's the info travel agents have been given from the airlines so should be accurate. If you have any other questions/concerns, you can call your air carrier direct and ask them. They're used to these questions and don't mind answering them.

Thanks Karen. I ALWAYS hand carry my film/camera and request hand check. The only place I've ever had an issue is Orlando. And to be extra safe the camera and film travel in a lead lined bag so even if they do try to override the request they hit that lead bag and have to pull it anyway.

And I knew when my son flew this past summer for a backpacking trip they were fine with their knives, etc. in the checked packs. But as noted in my original post - the rules are changing all the time so I thought I'd check.

Thanks all!

Deb
