I'm trying to get packed for my Christmas vacation (in 11 hours my plane should be taking off), and will have some runs and stuff over the time I'm gone. A couple of questions about packing things...

Obviously The Stick should go in my checked bag - not only could it be possibly construed as a weapon, it doesn't fit all the way in my carry-on.

My big questions are 1) the heart rate monitor strap with my Garmin FR60W and 2) the accompanying footpod, which is attached to my shoe. I'm wearing boots because they're easier to get on and off. Should I pack the pair with the footpod in my checked or would it be better in my carry-on so I can explain what it is if there are questions? And the heart rate monitor strap...another thing better put in my carry-on?

I didn't even think about those two things earlier. EEK! HELP!!!!

I think over the last 5 years I have only had TSA get curious of what was in the bag once. Then the HR strap and monitor were inter twined with a lap top charger and an extra battery for the laptop. So imagine the inmate of the battery mixed up with a bunch of wires and a watch.

Went a long way to say pack them in a nice and neat fashion, preferably stretched out and easily reached if a question comes up. You do not need to p I'll them out like a laptop.

Thanks Coach! I usually put all my cords in one ziplock bag that I pull out and sit next to my backpack so it's more clear. I'll make sure the HRM strap is neatly folded and just put the shoes with pod in the carry-on. :) Just to be safe. I don't want to end up being "that person" who causes an issue on Christmas Eve morning!!

I is actually better to make sure the cords are wrapped in the nice neat fashion using one of those really neat velcro straps.

I learned last week that iPads are not considered computers and can stay in your personal bag. I was shocked as the TSA guy strated reaching for the tub. I thought he wanted to put the iPad in a separate tub...he was just telling me that it should go back in the backpack. I guess the electronics pack is not as dense.

Let me add that Gels and such can be carried on. I generally do not pull them out at the x-ray machine but most likely will this year if they are in my carry on. They must fit in a quart sized zip lock bag and they do fall under the 3-1-1 rule. Note the last 1 is only one bag per person.

If you check them, which i normally do, but them in a baggy. they do tend to leak at the lower atmospheric pressures in flight.

Thanks again. I definitely wrap the cords neatly. I just put them in a big ziplock bag for ease of keeping them together and in case anyone wants to inspect them.

Good to know about gels. I'm not going to worry with those for this trip - I did throw a few Clif Bars in my bag for pre-run snacks. But I'm not planning on needing the gels for these couple of runs. Good to know for the next trip though. I just have to decide for that if it's worth waiting for luggage at 10:30pm to bring The Stick along (I'm in early enough ME is taking care of it this time!) or if I'll do an ice (or cool water) soak and just walking Saturday afternoon and Sunday pre-flight.

I've always made sure everything I would need to run is in my carry on. I did wonder about the gells and have never flown with them but everyone I asked said it would be ok.

I've been fortunate that on my fly away races I've never had a bag lost or delayed but I want to have everything in my carry on just in case the next race it the first time it happens.

Yeah. For marathon weekend I'm doing carry-on - mostly because I don't want to take a chance on it getting lost but also because i'm getting in beyond the time ME will get the bags for you and I don't want to have to wait on it.

I think I'm almost ready to leave for the Christmas trip. Starbucks here I come!!

I've gone through with foot pod in carry on and multiple cords. I usually put the cords in clear plastic bags, sometimes depending on the number, I may use a couple clear plastic bags. Somehow, they seem to see this in X-ray inspection and it has all cleared.

Have a good trip and enjoy your runs.

I have 2 different electronic gear bags; running and company... They are old triathlon swag bags and they work well. Makes it easy when packing for a business trip in a hurry.
