My wife and I like to cook our own food while we are at WDW but have had a bit of difficulty while staying in a studio. We are going to experiment with some Crockpot meals prefrozen and packed in a softside cooler. I am a bit concerned about the potential delays at the airport because the Crockpot is an electrical device and because we are trveling with food. Are my concerns warrented? We are not frequent flyers ... which may be self evident simply because of my question. Thank you for your help.

We packed a George Foreman grill as well as food. We carry on bread, cookies, cereal and other dry foods. Everything else gets checked in a small cooler and the appliances go in a checked suitcase so we don't have to carry them. We've used a soft-sided cooler but plastic containers got broken, so we now line it with thick cardboard to keep the sides from crushing down. We freeze the meats and anything that will tolerate it, and tuck in some "blue ice". Works like a charm and we have great breakfasts and snacks available.

There use to be a crock pot "swap" on-going between members which you may want to look into. I am uncertain if it has continued or not though as I do not recall seeing threads for quite some time (years) on this subject. It worked the same as the Christmas tree swaps where you sign up, pick it up from the previous member on the list and then you are responsible to get it to the next member on the list before departure. You could always start up a new exchange or see if others have an interest in doing so.

I would assume bringing one each trip (to and from) will certainly cause delays going through airport security.

A crockpot would be an ideal item to store in an Owners Locker rather than carry it back and forth on a plane.

We always take ours and love it. Log on to the food network for great crockpot ideas.

I took mine to FL for Christmas. DH thought I was nuts. Leaving PVD the TSA inspected the crockpot and the paper plates, and bowls I'd packed inside it (carried in a DVC tote bag), and said it was a good use of space. Leaving MCO the TSA said "that's a crock" and winked at me. He added "I bet the family loved what you cooked." Neither stop took any length of time. I want to get an Owner's Locker, but DH keeps vetoing it. I would put a crockpot in there for sure.

Check out the Camping Board here for some great crockpot recipes.

OT: Leaving on Saturday for the world  :woohoo: (No crockpot this time).

What a great idea!:goodvibes It reminds of the thread on the CB where a lady was asking if she could carry a turkey in her carry on for Thanksgiving!:lmao:

LOL! Spend over a hundred bucks a year to store a $15 crockpot? :confused3 I could buy a brand new crockpot every trip cheaper than that.

It's not just the crockpot but all the other stuff that you have to haul there and back, too. Or buy and toss when you don't use it all. Or buy and spend more because you're always buying small sizes of stuff since you won't use it all...

Not needing more than a carryon to go to Disney on the spur of the moment is wonderful.

Did you carry it on? What did you do about food?
Oh and you are not far from me!! I live 5 minutes from Woodstock!

Yes I carried it on. I bought food at Publix, and some dry food and cans in a plastic Walmart locker we checked on the plane. My favorite is the "dump cake," a nasty name for a delightful dessert. This is from the recipe thread on the Camping Board.

1 box chocolate cake mix
1 1/2 stick butter/margarine, melted
1 can cherry pie filling

I like to use crockpot liners for easier clean-up, but not required. Open and "dump" the can of pie filling into the bottom of the crockpot. Mix the melted margarine with the cake mix (Ignore any directions on the cake mix box). Spoon the cake mix mixture over the pie filling. Cook on low for 3 hours.

The dessert will be more like pudding. Everyone asks me to make this recipe.

Are you in Dudley, Southbridge, or Webster?

Dump cake sounds good! Maybe will have my "chef" try it. (DS15 likes to cook). I'm in Dudley right off of rt 31

It's even cherry-themed for President's day!

What small appliances are available from Mousekeeping upon request? I think I remember seeing that blenders are available. What about electric grills, crockpots, waffle-makers, griddles, rice cookers (which were standard equipment at a resort we visited in Hawaii), ...

With the limit of one checked bag per person now, it sure would be cheaper to buy a new one in Florida! :)

I'm a TSA employee - a crock pot in your checked bag is no problem at all. It shouldn't be a problem in carry-on either - if you can, ask the officer if you need to take it out of the bag and put it in it's own bin so they can get a good look at it in the x-ray. That's what they do for laptops and larger electronics that could be tampered with.

One tip - wind up the cord and use a rubber band to keep it together.
