I'm wondering what flight guidlines are (just in general hopefully) for kids, I know that each passanger is allowed a carry on with most flights, My question is if my kids each have a small backpack with things to entertain them on the flight will that count as their Carry On, or could they have that AND a Carry On?

The guidelines for children with tickets are the same as for adults. Once carry-on bag and one personal item. Check your airline's web site for more details.

Yes, they are the same as for adults.

The expectation is that the larger carry-on (22" roller-board type or duffle) would fit in the overhead bin and then the personal item under your seat.

So, contrary to what you will see on the plane - the expectation is that only ONE (1) item will go in the overhead per passenger.

Depending on your airline, you may be able to have your kids bring a backpack and another bag/personal item. However, if your kids are little, I think the less you carry on the better. Getting through security, through the airport and onto the plane with lots of bags can be overwhelming. It's so easy to lose something when you have a lot of things to keep track of. My oldest two kids are 10 & 8. They always bring a backpack with snacks, books, toys, etc. My youngest is 2. His "carry on" is the diaper bag. DH & I share a carry on. For us, it's hard enough dealing with the carseat, stroller, etc without having two bags/items per person.

Agree 100% with laughinplace199 -- the LESS you and your kids have to deal with security, etc., with carry ons, the better. Having backpacks with the stuff they'll want to access during the flight (with the backpacks fitting under the seats in front of them) is enough to have to contend with, without also having bags to store in overheads. And, keeping track of all their stuff on the plane is important, too.

Would like to just add: HEADPHONES! If your child is going to watch a DVD, listen to music, play Nintendo that has sound effects.
Not everyone in a few rows' radius wants to hear your kid's entertainment.

Had a family like this in the row in front of me on a plane today for 2 hours. Luckily, I had my ipod I could listen to and cover up their noise, but I shouldn't be forced to do that. Sometimes I would rather sit in peace.

and they had the gall to leave the DVD playing all the way to landing, after those devices should be turned off and stowed. The entitlement disease is spreading.:sad2:
