Traveling with children

Look at your airlines website. They usually have the guidelines listed. According to the faa
Each airline determines identification requirements for minors. Contact your airline well in advance of your travel date to determine if they have unique policies or procedures for minors.

Typically, minors under the age of 18 do not have to present identification for domestic U.S. travel. Airlines will accept identification from the responsible adult on behalf of the minor(s)

For international travel, minors under the age of 18 must present the same travel documents as the adult.

We have flown several times this year with our kids (ages 8 and 4) and have not been asked for ID for them (we travel with their passports, but no one ever asks to see them). They are usually asked their names to check against the boarding passes. My 8 year old thinks it is pretty cool, while my four year old is usually too shy to speak and her sister has to vouch for her identity! :rotfl2:

I've traveled with lots of kids (my own 4 year old and groups of elementary through high school age kids for theater related trips). I've never been asked for or had to show any sort of ID for any of them, and we've traveled lots of different arilines to lots of different destinations. (I think the only exception generally is if you are traveling with a child under two for whom you did not purchase a ticket. They can ask for the birth certificate to verify the age of the lap child.)

My kids are also 5 & 9.....we have never been asked to show ID for them. When we flew to WDW and back in June, the guards at the security checkpoints asked them their names. My 9-year-old DS answered, but my ultra-shy 5-year-old DD just stared at them from behind my legs. Then they would ask her several different names until they got to her real one that was listed on the boarding pass, at which point she would nod her head. In any of the times I've ever traveled with my kids, I've never been asked to show ID.

We've also flown several times with our children and have never had to prove identity. Noone has ever asked my children their names, and none of them have had to vouch for each other. Which is good, because knowing my five and a half year old, he'd probably say something like, "Huh? No, that's not my sister. We found her". Or something else equally embarrasing. This is the same child, who on our last trip, said, very loudly, "My plane is going to crash today" right in front of the rent-a-security guard! Ugh.... :)
