Traveling Turkeys Part 2 11/22/08

Good Morning too!
I didn't get to participate in the discussion last night because after dinner I was too busy watching the Stillers whoop the Redskin's butts! Historically when the Redskins lose the game prior to election, the White House changes parties. So I guess that means Obama will win.
Planning last night went ok. Mostly he wanted to talk about $ - how much in traveler's checks, how much cash, what credit card to use in port, how much for jewelry because he did look at the Navigators when I left them in his library (bathroom) and there are a gagillion jewelry stores. He's very pleased that Margaritaville is so close to the port! He doesn't want to plan dinner at WDW, just play it by ear. He thinks he may want to eat at Columbia Harbor House! He said there's no need to eat a big meal since we'll be stuffing ourselves onboard. At least he's thinking about it!

I too am pale - the only woman in the world who is whiter than me is the Queen of England. But Chuck - always, always wear sunscreen. I had a melanoma removed 4 years ago and the scare alone is enough to put you in a tizzy. I grew up on the lake shore and the beach and sailing was my summer. Never used sunscreen and that was the result. That's the price for vanity. I still worship the sun but I lather up!

Have a good day all. Make good choices.

DON"T FORGET TO GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

Hi everyone,

16 DAYS FOR US--not that ANY of us are counting (with the exception of you CHUCK). Going to the TAs today and getting the Amtrak tix and DCL package.:cool1: Making lists of who I need to call, final things to shop for, and at least trying to pack Kenna's things. With Kenzie (my fashion advisor), I just need to reming her to pack her shoes. This child has everything else packed. She is so fashion conscious at 8, I can't even begin to think what she'll be like as a teen.:scared1:

I think I'll take the time now to explain a few things to you guys. Please bear with me for a few minutes. After you read this, you'll know what we are thankful for and why we have chosen this cruise.

As you know, Kenna is 3. When she was 5 months old, she became sick. She began losing weight. Every time I nursed her, she would have projectile vomiting. She was admitted to our hospital and diagnosed with "Failure to Thrive" She dropped to the 3%ile on the charts. We found out that she was allergic to my breast milk and I had to stop nursing. We ended up having to take her to Childrens Hospital in Washington, DC for evaluation. We had to go thru 4 formulas before we found the right one. We found out that she is lactose intolerant, allergic to peanuts and citrus. After all of this, she has been the healthiest one, except for the virus in early October.

Then on Sept 18, 2006, 9 days after my MIL turned 62, she had a severe bleed in her brain. She almost died that night and a few other times were so touch and go, that we had funeral plans made just in case. My MIL was one of those who wouldn't sit still, always had to be doing something. After 5 months in ICU and then a regular room, we were able to transfer her to a nursing home. We still have times where we wonder if she will make it. She has had both of her legs amputated due to decreased circulation, and mentally she just isn't here all of the time. She has days where she knows exactly who we are and days that she has no clue.

Oct 1, 2006, my 60 yo mom passes out at a festival. Goes to our local very small hospital, and is told that her blood count is low. She is discharged. I then take her to her doctor and she gets admitted to the hospital where Bob and I work. They persue the low blood counts and find that my mom had colon cancer.

3 major issues in 8 months--I should be done right---WRONG. However, we had already booked our 1st DCL cruise for the 1st week in May 2007. Felt that we deserved it.

The day before we leave, my 79 yo grandmother has her leg amputated because of a fall that left her in so much pain that she couldn't stand it. We almost cancelled the cruise, but she told us to go. She passed away 3 days after her 80th birthday. July 1, 2007.

August 1, 2007--Kenzie has her 1st of 4 kidney stones. Enough said about that.

August 26, 2007--Kenzie has a followup appointment with her Urologist regarding the stones. Bob is already in Winchester (he was working) and met us at the appointment when he got off work. I took both girls with me. We had the appointment and everything was ok. We stopped at McDonalds, just to get a snack. We have a 40 minute drive home. I put dinner inthe crock pot so we could eat when we got home. OF coarse with Bob already being there, we had both vehicles. We stopped for gas 10 miles up the road. While I was pumping gas, Kenna unhooked herself from her car seat which I didn't see until I was driving. Kenzie was with Bob (in the front seat of his vehicle). I had driven about a mile when I realized that Kenna wasn't strapped in her seat. I pulled over to strap her back in. Bob got out of hes car, and I told him we were ok and were leaving. He got back in, but didn't put his seatbelt on. I was in front of him. 10 miles up the road, traffic was stopped for a turning car at the top of a hill. The sun was going down and created a blinding light. Our van was gold, and got lost in the sunlight. Bob came around the turn and didn't see that I had stopped...........needless to say, a wreck, both of our cars. No one elses. I was fine. The impact broke my drivers seat and the middle van seat. My seat came back and stopped within a 1/2 inch of crushing Kenna. Kenna was fine. Kenzie was scared to death. Had a few bruises, but was ok considering she was in the front seat. She had just reclined the seat to take a nap on the way home. Bob was not so lucky. He spent 10 days in the hospital, almost went to ICU because he went into acute kidney failure and gained 40 pounds of fluid in 3 days. But we survived that incident. Lost both vehicles in the same accident (should have heard my phone call with the insurance company).

And then this summer with more hospitalizations with kidney stones and migraines and viruses.

Just wanted to share. ALSO, my SIL (Bob's sister) is slightly slow. Depending on the situation, she can be a perfectly normal 37 year old, but when she gets excited, she becomes a kindergartener. She has a hard time talking, so you have to try and listen well to understand her sometimes, she doesn't hold her fork correctly, and walks with a gimp. They grew up poor, and for many years, it was just her and mom at home. She has NEVER had a vacation. Her world was rocked when mom had her bleed. She is more excited that all of us about this vacation. There may be times when there are activities in the kids club that I want her to participate in. I have spoken to DCL, and they don't have a problem with this. So if the kids tell you that there was a lady in the club, it will be Melinda.

I know that there will be those of you who will snear and make comments, but I hope that youcan look deep within your hearts and think about what if WE were your family and have dealt with all of this. Please make Melinda welcome. If you choose not to, so be it.

Sorry to go on and on, but now you know what THE COOK FAMILY is thankful for.

Have a good day and make good choices.

Judy,

We're Stillers Fans in the heart of REDSKIN country......:cool1: I went tobed and got up around midnight with the tv blarring and Bob snoring. Saw the score, but what happened to Ben?

Lora

Lora - Ben was pulled out because he aggravated his right shoulder seperation. That's the word coming from the Steelers camp this morning. But Byron Leftwich did a great job replacing him! And my lovely "Fast Willie Parker" never dissapoints!

As far as your SIL, of course I will welcome her! Between Linda and I we have over 40 years of advocacy experience with folks with developmental disabilities. She will be taken care of (there but for the grace of God go I). And besides, you guys have never seen my reaction when I get excited - especially when I see Donald Duck! :donald: I think it's incredible that you are sharing this vacation with her. I can't wait to meet her!:hyper2: :wave2:  And as far as her speech goes, there are lots of ways to communicate, especially when you are on the happiest ship in the world.

Have fun getting your documents and tickets today!

Here's the link for some recent Double Dip Navigators
Does anyone have any more recent ones?
Do you think there will be Gingerbread house making on board?

On the past Thanksgiving Cruises I have been on you spend the week watching them build the gingerbread house. Lots and lots of frosting :)

I think you are the one I told that you should check with the Oct. 25 folks since their itinerary is identical to ours....but my friend told me last night they had to make some last minute changes so it was not identical. sorry for the bad advice.

Lora,
Thanks for taking the time to share with us. I am sure she will not be the only adult in the kids club searching for tink or making a pillowcase.....we are all just big kids.

Hey Judy,

I can't believe our Steelers pulled it out. I went to bed early, been battling a sinus infection and the score was 6-6. I really like Leftwich....I mean I love Ben and all but he needs to take a rest and get better.

Yes, please exercise your right to vote today!!!

Morning!

We're off to shop and vote soon. Wish me luck that I don't end up battling Ds in the middle of the mall. He does not like to shop at all, but unfortunately the days of shopping for him without him trying on clothes is over.

Lora, I'm sorry to hear of all the struggles your family has had to indure over the past couple years. I'm sure, though, that all of these things have made you all stronger as individuals and as a family. I'm very excited for your sil. What an exciting vacation she has in front of her. I'm sure she'll have a blast. And DCL is so good with people with special needs. My nephew sailed with us on our last trip. He has fragile x and autism, and can be very difficult, but all the employees and most of the guests were very good with him. Of course you always get the intolerant people and the ones that stare, as you know. One time we were at the beach and my nephew started to stim and get loud. A lady near us kept staring. My dh stared back thinking she would realize what she was doing but she didn't stop. Finally, he says "what are you looking at"? She starts stammering and finally says "are they twins" meaning my two nephews. We just looked at her and each other and started laughing. We laughed the whole way to the car. What a fool she was.

Hello, everyone my family of four will be attending the cruise, nice to meet you all! Any tips for toddler and infants? :cheer2:

Geez, make one comment about the signature tickers being off by a day and never live it down...LOL...does not matter how you compute it other than to say we all board the ship on the 22nd.

If you're referring to my comment about "16 days until I see the Duck", we are going to WDW before we sail!:woohoo: :donald:

Actually I was referring to lora's comment on the previous page....but not sure if I interpreted it correctly

Attention fellow Traveling Turkeys:

I cancelled a Palo tea on the first "at sea day." It was for four people. I hope you're able to snatch it if you were looking for it.

Happy Tuesday!

Not too much longer now. :teeth: It's almost time to pack. :woohoo:

Welcome Aboard. Do you know where your cabin is yet......i think the majority of this group is on Deck 2.

What ages are you kids. There are several people with toddlers. We started cruising when my daughter was 15 months and she is now 4.

Welcome:wizard:

Welcome! My youngest was 14 months when we went on DCL last time. She really enjoyed Flounder's and the splash area (on the Wonder). The Magic just added the splash area. I think that'll be a great area for the little ones to play. Also, I went into the Kid's club with her and she was allowed to play during down time for the club. She's 2 1/2 now and is looking forward to going on Mickey's boat.

Ok, Chuck, since you seem to be the resident bringing drinks on board expert (is that why Ice is in your name?), can you use that fake ice in the soft side cooler? Cause then it may help the cooler in the room actually keep things cool. I absolutely hate Coke and am trying to find a way to bring my supply of Diet Pepsi's with me.

Anyone have a recommendation of a rolling soft side cooler? The ones I've seen at Target are all the hard version.
I found a nice cooler at Bealls. They're expensive if you don't find them on sale though.

Judy, good luck with that. I think Mark has him beat though in the not participating department.

For everyone else who doesn't know this story, the other day I was talking about the trip (nothing new about that) when I mentioned GC. Mark looked at me and said "We're going to GC? Since when?":scared1: At first I thought he was kidding, but he wasn't. I told him that if I had known he was that clueless about our ports of call, I wouldn't have said anything and watched his surprise when we arrived there on the 27th.:rotfl: We've talked about GC and he ACTED like he was listening. Judy has talked to him about it too. Makes me wonder what else he's tuned out.
Uh oh, are we at Grand Cayman on the 26th or 27th? I'm been trying to set something up with a lady at the Guy Harvey gallery in GC and I told her we'd be there on the 27th.

Judy, my dog is doing much better. Thanks for asking! How was dinner and your planning session?

I expected to get out my snorkel gear and pack a few more things today. That didn't happen. Tomorrow, the kids are off for conference day. Unfortunately we'll be clothes shopping for DS. He tried on a bunch of shorts and dress pants and very few things fit. If nothing else, we need to get him pants. It will not be a fun day shopping with both of them.

November starts the month of no school for my Ds. I think he will be in school for a total of 10 1/2 days this month. He has 4 vacation days, 1 conf day, 3 half days for parent teacher conf and 3 unexcused days. He's excited as only a second grader can be.

Sandy, you crack me up. Enjoy the beach. Wish I could join you. I'm scarey white!

Well, looks like no beach for me Friday. My car needs to go in the shop and DH will be using his car.
