I asked about traveling to Bar Harbor a few weeks ago and have decided that flying to Portland is our best option.

Several replies spoke of awful traffic on Highway 1. I planned to use I-95 to Bangor and then turn south on Alt 1. Would taking ME Highway 3 at Augusta be okay/better?

We have a full week, but I want it to be relaxing not stressful. Frankly, I can think of nothing more stressful than heavy traffic on unfamiliar highways during a vacation... there's always lost reservations I guess ; )

It appears that peak color for the region we're heading for is the first or second week in October. Again, is it a fantasy to think that it can be relaxing?

I hope that arriving on Saturday or Sunday and not really starting touring until Monday would get us past the weekend crowds.

If anyone has experiences to share please do. Also, any favorite online resources would be welcome.

thanks,
Ronda

Can I ask why you aren't flying directly into Bangor if you are going to Bar Harbor? From there you could rent a car and drive to Mount Desert Island via rte 1A.

We also want to shop in Freeport. Plus Bangor is more expensive from MCI and requires three legs.

My advice then would be to stay on I-95 all the way to Bangor then... get onto 395 in Bangor and then right onto 1A in Brewer.:hyper: This is my "neck of the woods" so if I can help you anymore just let me know!!
