We will be headed to Disney in April from Texas and have decided to do a 1 night layover at an RV park in Destin prior to heading in the next day. My question is where would be a good place to stop on the way back? I would like to drive about 7-9 hours back before stopping. Was thinking somewhere around Gulf Shores but that seems a little out of the way for such a short stop.I would prefer something a little closer to I-10. Any suggestions?

We are headed to The Fort in April from Texas as well! We are stopping halfway and staying at a KOA in Milton Fl. It looks to be about halfway from our home. We are about 90 miles north of Houston. I've not stayed at this KOA, but it was recommended to me on the DIS boards when I asked a couple months ago. Hope this helps! :)

Have an aunt and uncle who have stayed at Shady Acres Campground right outside Mobile, AL before. They always said it was a good place to stop and rest. Sounds like it might be right in the neighborhood you are looking for.

Thank you. I will look it up.

This one puts us about an hour closer to home leaving about 7 hours left. That is probably about the right distance.

Another member had mentioned Hilltop RV in Robertsdale, AL. I was going to look that one up as well.

They liked Shady Acres because it had pull through sites that made it easier for overnight stops and not having to back in or unhook.

I would recommend the KOA in Milton FL. I have never stayed there but it does have good reviews. I do live in Mobile AL and have never been to Shady Acres but I do know the area and it is not the best. Be aware also Destin is not close to the interstate at all. The shortest route involves a toll bridge and heavy traffic. Unless you are going to Destin to stay I would forget that option. There are plenty of places along the interstate to stay that are close and cheap.

Thank you for the advice. Unfortunately the Destin choice was my wife's choice and no convincing could change that... I tried. We are actually leaving at a crazy hour the night before so we can get there mid morning, spend the day there and the next morning.

The KOA in Milton is sounding like a good option.

Where are you staying in Destin? We've stayed at Camping on the Gulf several times. Amazing "on the beach" camping, but prices make the Fort look like a bargain. Topsail Hill and Henderson Beach State Parks are very nice, but hard to get into. I've been to both, but never camped in them.

We are staying at Destin RV Beach Resort. Not too cheap but for one night and the wife is happy I can manage.

Not sure why she chose Destin I feel it is way over developed but you will be right on the beach so it should be fine. Another suggestion a little farther down the beach would be Saint Andrews state park on Panama City Beach. We stayed there and loved it. We would go back but have gotten so hooked on Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores. It's our second home now.

We have been wanting to go spend some time at Gulf Shores. That will certainly be in our list of places to stop in the near future.

Make sure you book very early for Gulf Sate Park. You can book online. It has gotten very popular during the Spring and Summer months and stays full. During the winter time they have a lot of Snow Birds that stay there. During that time they allow monthly rentals. There are tons of activities including fishing, swimming and miles of paved bike trails and the beautiful beaches across the highway are a bonus.

I will be sure and book as early as possible. Typically we are good about booking fairly early... that is once we actually agree where we want to go next.

Great hope we see you there. We're already booked for Spring Break April 3-12 and July 4th week. We'll be at Fort Wilderness for Halloween weekend Oct 30- Dec 8. We booked later hoping and praying they turn on the Osborne lights before we leave. We missed it by a week last year.

I got reservations at Gulf State from May 22-31 and again July 6th-13th.

We booked here locally for Memorial Day weekend at Brazos State Park and then July 4th Weekend in Port O Connor here in Texas on the coast which means if we can make it to Gulf State Park this year it will have to be later in the year. We will have to see how it goes we have a cruise in September so the year is filling up.

Maybe we'll catch you there Tiggerdad. Would enjoy meeting up for a beer or soda. Our reservation is 6-28 to 7-8. So we will be there on the same two days.
