Traveling the globe

A few but I usually retreat. Do you people who travel from the US often and recently find the rest of the world welcoming? I get the vibe Americans are not embraced elsewhere, so really why would I go? Recently, I've been wondering if it is the media crafting the "World good, America bad" vibe or if it is real. I'm not big on trying to convince anyone of anything so unless there are open arms I'm like, whatevs, do you✌️

The only place where I experienced any hostility towards Americans was Paris. People there were very rude and agitated when you didn't speak fluent French. That was also a decade ago and not relevant to how it is now. People in other countries are very friendly and welcoming.

I definitely have a shorter list than most, but everywhere I've been everyone has seemed completely welcoming. I mean they're not running to literally hug me and exclaim over my American-ness, but people are very friendly, quick to offer suggestions or advice about what to see in their country, helpful with language barriers. It's not like they're giving me the side eye or rolling their eyes at me. Most people seem really eager to share what is wonderful about their country with someone from another part of the world. Everywhere I've been, people are generally very fluent in English - at least the people I interact with as a tourist. I try and learn some phrases and use them though - I really like doing that, and I think people are excited when you show that you're interested in their culture and language and have made a small effort to participate in that (even if it's just a very small effort). And in Spanish speaking countries, I try and get by with my 4 years of high school Spanish - not because they aren't fluent in English, but because I prefer to practice Spanish. Honestly, I feel more welcomed in some of the countries I've traveled to than I do in some parts of the US.

Same. Make an attempt to speak the local language, even if it's just hello, and people have all been perfectly nice.

I do sometimes cringe myself when I see the stereotypical loud Americans in my travels. I don't think they're the majority of Americans, but they sure are the most noticeable. I don't need to hear your life story from across a restaurant, thanks.

24 and American Samoa, Fiji, New Caledonia and Australia this coming fall.

I haven't found people unfriendly to Americans, but I have seen some really rude Americans. I can get by in French speaking places.

My travel has been mostly
North America (Canada, Mexico, Belize),
Caribbean (Bahamas, Aruba, St Lucia),
Europe (Ireland, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Spain, Monaco). Last 2 very briefly, we drove from southern France to Barcelona to fly home, visited Parc Guell.

DH has been to many more places in his scuba trips!

I'm very sheltered. Canada, Jamaica, Bahamas.

And then many brief visits to Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, the US of course, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom, and nearby Canada again. :duck: :teeth:

I have never had any issues with people being rude, except in Aruba. Every person there was extremely rude. Everyplace else is fine with you if you don't act like an idiot. The key is to not act like a tourist. Like Anthony Bourdain said, be a traveler, not a tourist. I found that the best way to that is by doing your research ahead of time. Not just what hotel you will stay at, but researching local customs and how people act there. In this day and age of the internet, it is so easy to get that information. I usually spend months researching before I am even ready to book and then keep researching up until I leave.
