travelex insurance

If you buy the travel insurance that DVC sells, you receive a monetary amount for the points you used if you have to cancel your trip at the last minute or during the trip. I travel everywhere using my points(DCL cruises, ABD, etc.) and, thankfully, have never had to file a claim. However, I have asked them before what happens if I did have to cancel. They said that they would equate a monetary value to the points used for the trip(I don't remember if they are actually doing the points or the maintenance fees associated with the points) and reimburse you that much(but you won't get your points back).

I would suggest calling them(1-800-228-9792--I think this number still works) and asking so that you are clear on what is and is not covered based on when you cancel your trip. I'm pretty sure they don't do anything unless you can't get your points back from DVC.

Several people have posted on this site about getting reimbursements from travel insurance, but I don't know if they used points to book any of that travel.

Also, as I recall, the insurance fee is per use year. So if you use banked, current and borrowed points for a reservation, you will have to buy the insurance for 3 use years.

Good to verify everything with MS before you actually buy the insurance so that you know exactly what will be covered (or not covered).

I buy the insurance every year. I am always one year ahead in case I need to borrow points. If you buy just before maintenance fees are due, the exclusion for preexisting conditions is waived. We fly to all of our WDW trips so the coverage for non-refundable airline tickets makes it very worthwhile for us. Also, we are old (66 and 81) and most other travel insurances are based on age, so the DVC Travelex is a real bargain for us. So far we have not needed to make a claim (thank heaven!) but a DVCer has posted sometime in the past that Travelex did pay quickly for a DVC claim.

It's actually A pretty competitive price, especially if it covers everyone on the reservation.

Unfortunately, it's only for US residents. I haven't found good insurance for DVC points, other than crossing my fingers and toes ;)

I haven't bought the DVC insurance but I have bought insurance thru Insuremytrip.com (similar insurance). I used them for our trip to Europe & DCL Med cruise a couple of years ago because it was such an expensive trip (not booked on points so it was a LOT of cash out-of-pocket). I almost always insure expensive CASH trips because well, it's CASH.

I have mixed feelings about using insurance for DVC points because it doesn't really cover your points dollar for dollar. Last summer we had to cancel our DVC trip to DL and Aulani at the last minute due to a medical emergency with our DS (he wasn't allowed to fly) and we didn't have insurance. Everything worked out OK in the end - and we didn't get shafted too bad not having it. Though it was a huge hassle we were able to cancel just about everything we had planned without any penalties and we were able to re-plan our trip to drive to WDW instead so we didn't waste or lose our points. I guess we got pretty lucky with that in that 1) we found availability and 2) DS was permitted to travel AT ALL. We had booked our flights on 3 different airlines and each one had a different cancelation policy. Delta didn't charge us any penalties but said we had to rebook AND FLY before our 1 yr. from orig. purchase date (I had booked flights in January for August). Alaska Airline charged us only $100 pp penalty but gave us 1 yr. from our TRIP START DATE to fly (so even tho we had purchased in January for August they gave us until THIS August to fly) and Hawaiian Airline gave us until 1 yr. from purchase to RE-BOOK with no limits to WHEN we flew. So we re-booked our Delta flights for a trip to WDW in January and are re-using the other flights to re-plan our trip to DL & Aulani. Because of the terrible winter we were having I bought trip insurance FOR OUR FLIGHTS this time for our January trip. I didn't buy the DVC insurance. I just wanted to cover the flights. I guess I could've done the DVC insurance but I wasn't thinking about the points. Anyway, sure enough while we were in FL another big snowstorm formed over MLK weekend and was to hit our home area of DC the day we were supposed to fly home. Delta has no direct flights to/from DC and Orlando so we had to transfer in Atlanta. We knew the odds were probably 99% that school would be canceled the next day at home and we were afraid we'd go from Orlando to Atlanta and then get stuck there. And even if we DID make it home we would land after dark and then have to drive 40 some miles home in this storm. Delta was offering to waive change fees to the DC area flights because of the storm so we opted to stay an extra night in FL rather than risk getting stranded. Well, so by taking advantage of Delta's waiver we basically voided the trip insurance because it wouldn't pay anything unless we were already stranded somewhere. Being proactive and opting to NOT get stranded in an airport only served to waste the money I spent on the policy. It was then worthless and I am not sure I would buy it again. I bought it because I was worried about NOT GETTING to FL on time NOT because I was worried about getting home on time.:lmao:

I just called DVC (actually called travel insurance directly twice) and got all different answers to my many questions. When I decided to go ahead and purchase the insurance DVC told me I only needed to buy 2 policies since I banked my 2013 points into 2014 so I would be insuring the banked points because they are 2014 points now and 2015. I am a bit nervous since I have 2 reservations using 3 years worth of points. (about 1300 points) Also is the pre-existing condition for the traveling party? My father in law is sick right now and that is why I purchased the insurance just in case something happens - did I waste my money? thanks in advance

I can't comment on much of this post but I think that DVC is wrong about the banked points. I always buy insurance for every use year to make sure all points are covered. It doesn't make sense to me that you could get 2 years worth of points covered by one premium just by banking. Actually if you are using borrowed points that same reasoning would say that the borrowed points were in 2014 so you could buy one use year for 3 years worth of points. I would not take DVC's word about the insurance coverage.

I agree it does not make sense to me either and I questioned it more then once. I asked multiple questions and got different answers from travelex about the coverage also getting different info from DVC. I will call back tomorrow.

I am not sure I even need it if I am reading the exclusions correctly. My father in law has been battling cancer since 2009 going back and forth that is why I have been insuring my trips but since he has a "pre existing condition" (since 2009) if something was to happen to him I am thinking it is not covered does anyone know????

When did you buy the insurance? Pre-existing conditions are waived if you buy the insurance when maintenance fees are due. That is why I always buy mine in December. I am not sure about whether it covers everyone in the travel party. You need to read the policy that was sent to you when you bought the insurance.

I just bought the policy since we have an Oct and Dec trip and stand to loose 1300 points. I have been reading the policy that is on line and it is not really clear to me. I will call in the morning both Travelex and DVC. Thank you

So did we find out if the insurance reimburses the value of the points lost?
