I went to insuremytrip.com to compare travel insurance. Rates ranged from 129.00 to 329.00 for the same basic coverage. How much insurance do I need, and why such a big difference in the rates? Highest quote was from Access America, lowest from Travelex. Any experience with either of these companies?

We had access America through DCL. I believe it was $99 for each adult, and something like $59 or $69 for the kids. We had to make a claim, and were very happy with their responsiveness.

Can you check with DCL to see if you can buy the insurance with them if it's cheaper?

you should check the actual limitations and coverage dollar amounts. some items are different. medical evacuation for one company may be $25,000 and for another $50,000, medical coverage could be similar as well, $10,000 for one $25,000 for another. those amounts could be what changes. They may also give you quotes based on your vacation cost, let's say $3,800. If they classify costs as being $3,000 - $4,000 as a category for one company, but $3,500 - $5,000 for another company that would raise your rates. Factors like this could contribute and the possibility one just charges more. I am looking into Travelex for our trip in January.

Could anyone share the pro's and con's of travel insurance. We have never purchased it for prior vacations, but this will be our first cruise.

Thanks!

cons:

if you paid for it and you don't use it you may feel you wasted your money.

if you don't buy it and need it, could be real expensive.

Pros:

covers medical incidents should you need it. Slip and fall on an excursion. get sick on board, etc.

if your flight is late and you miss the ship, covered. illness or death in family and you cancel, covered. illness or death while away and need to return early, covered. baggage loss or delay covered

each policy will list the items covered and try to sell you on these points.

some people have needed to use, many others have never had to. its all in your risk tolerance on whether it is right for you. lots of people will recommend having it and if you are flying on the same day as your cruise it is a good idea to have.

You are welcome. Have a great trip.
