Travel insurance?

Do you or don't you get it? I am debating..we are taking a party of 7 and boy, that would save a few dollars.Yet, wow, I just don't know.Is it something that I can cancel as we get closer to the trip and I do not forsee any changes/cancelations? Hope I am not opening up a pandora's box but what are your feelings??

I don't believe you can cancel travel insurance once you take it. If you don't see any possibilities of cancellations (sick relatives, etc), then don't take it. It pays the non-refundable portion of your trip if you have to cancel. Take a look at how much you would lose for a last minute cancellation vs the cost of the insurance.

the way I look at it is, if I were booking the trip myself, I couldn't get travel insurance, so why would I buy it just because someone is doing the planning for me. Does that make any sense???

u cancel it u have until the period before u would be assessed penalties, for example, my vacation is in december, i can cancel anything up to october without occurring any penalties but after that then it is a percentage
i am still debating that issue too

It depends upon the circumstances.

For our cruise, we took out the travel insurance. The thought of being in a foreign port when an emergency arises can be very scary. The travel insurance not only covered any money lost due to the disruption of our trip, it also covered medical necessities and emergency transportation back home. We were also covered if something unforseen happened prior to the trip. Since DH's parents are elderly and I have a nephew who suffers from a rare genetic disorder, there is always the possibility that something could have come up. Thank gooodness that nothing did!

When I book a trip to WDW myself, I don't take out travel insurance. The airlines can be negotiated with, the rental car is a reservation only, the park passes are good forever. At most, all that I can lose is the deposit that I made on the room.

but isn't the travel insurance for accidents on the ship also or just in case of cancelation? I have never used it when I plan my own trip because I know my insurance would cover it but I don't know about a three day trip on the boat what insurance would cover...and I have never had to cancel a trip planned yet...

I've never taken out the insurance either. I always stress for the last few weeks before the trip about things that could happen to disrupt the trip. However, other than my hotel (priceline usually), I really wouldn't lose a whole lot. Like a previous poster said the tickets will be good forever, the rental car requires no cash down, and the airfare can be changed (even if it requires the $25 fee). I guess it would be a different story about having the trip interrupted while you were there-- then I don't know what sort of provisions are made by the insurance.

There are different packages you can buy. Some are only for cancellations, some cover luggage, some cover medical emergencies. Different prices for different types of coverages.

Watch the pre-existing condition clause. If you already have a medical problem when you buy the insurance, it may not be covered if you cancel because of it.
