We are planning a DIY holiday to Orlando for the first time.
Previously have used Tesco Insurance since it was necessary to protect Tesco Deals. £180 for annual insurance.

DD has a pre-exisiting medical condition (minor asthma).

I am sure there are better bargains for insurance to be had, but also want to make sure that we are covered with a company that will not wriggle out of any claim.

Suggestions please ? The annual insurance is not really required since we primarily only holiday once a year.

I personally would get a single trip insurance with the additional cover for your DD asthma.

When we were in Florida last year we needed medical treatment for my daughters eyes (some sort of allergy) $480 and we were told that as we had single trip insurance we were covered as although her eye problems started in the Uk several months earlier this was still AFTER we had taken the policy out. We were advised that had we had annual insurance we wouldn't have been covered as we had seeked medical treatment in the Uk prior to our USA trip. :confused3 Now I won't touch annual insurance.

DW has medical conditions, we have taken out insurance with insure and go.
Very easy application form and the prices are not bad at all. :thumbsup2

I used to always recommend Insure & Go but as they say you dont know how good a company is until you try claim, I & Go were not good when we were stuck in Florida with the Ash cloud, they refused to consider any claims so I changed to Marks & Spencer, similar price to I & Go. Hope I never find out how good they are.

I remember you had difficulties. So good to know who best to avoid.

We have annual with Direct Line. They send out a letter confirming what pre-existing conditions they cover. if you get new conditions after you have taken it out you would have to tell them but we have been impressed with how helpful they are.

We've got an annual with post office as they would cover our health issues at an ok price. They paid out without hassle on a broken camera.

Used Insure and Go in 2007 and they were awful to deal with when we had a claim - DD got chickenpox which meant we couldn't fly home as planned. Had to involve insurance ombudsman in end. I suspect most insurers are similar but on principle i'd avoid insure and go.

I used to work as a health information advisor at NHS direct and we regularly got quereies about insurance for people with pre exsisting medical conditions.I used to recommend looking on the british heart foundation website as if they cover for cardiac and respriritory conditions they will cover almost anything. I know marks and spencers were on that list but double check. As long as DD has inhalers and preventitives or if on nebs can take your own machine etc and script from the gp for her meds then that will be cheaper obviously. Hope this helps

I have mine through M&S, read great reviews for travel insurance, also got a great Quidco cashback and lots of M&S points as I am card holder.

You should be ok with M&S my grandparents have had to claim twice this year once for the Ash cloud and being stuck in Spain, 2nd after my Granddad got took into Intensive Care a few weeks before their holiday. M&S were great with them both times.

We have an annual policy with M&S as they cover our existing medical conditions, give high cover for DIY travel and also covered our DD when she travelled without us last year. On the whole the reviews are very good and I know they were paying out with the ash cloud last year. I was very pleased with their initial response when one of our suitcases was damaged on our return from WDW last year but didn't need to pursue a claim in the end as the airport had it collected, repaired and returned within three days.

::yes::

Thanks for the info about Insure and Go. We used them last year but luckily didn't need to make a claim. Probably would have used them again if I hadn't read this thread.... just need to sort out when we can return :headache:

We were with insure and go last year and when we made a claim they were brilliant. The whole claim process took a very short time. Would insure with them again. :)

Julie, looking at insurance for next year, you are in the same boat as us, do you take out special insurance for Joshua?

I have travel insurance through my bank and they charged me £12 extra for Daniel's extra needs as well as ASD. Looking back, Daniel has a feeding tube and £12 seems mighty cheap, because if that came out, we would have had a big problem..

I take review sites with a pinch of salt (most people only post when these a problem) but I like to read a few comments to see how people have been treated and try read into the reviews a little, this site covers a few companies
Tescos are near bottom, Insure and Go not much better but thats probably down to them not paying out with the Ash cloud, that lost them a lot of customers.

I had Insure & Go for a couple of years, but never had to claim. The last 3 years i have took AA Annual Insurance policy, just because they where cheaper, covers DW medical conditions, and mine. Had to claim last year when we got home, for medical treatment for DW, and once forms where filled in by doctor had our money within 7 to 10 days

Also have used the AA for my last few trips and using them again for my trip to NY next year. Haven't had to claim from them myself *touch wood* but my parents have twice (once being earlier this year) and have had their claim paid both times :thumbsup2 AA basically provided the cover that suited me best, they cover DIY as well so have Financial Failure included as standard.
