Can somone please explain what travel insurance actually covers when you buy an airplane ticket? Can you cancel the ticket for any reason and get your money back, or is it only for certain things? Will it cover you if you loose your job?:confused3 If you purchased 6 tickets at once and wanted to cancel only 2 of them, could you?

I have never purchased travel insurance, and I am just wondering if it would be worth it.

If the airline is offering to sell you travel insurance when you purchase the plane tickets, you need to read their fine print to see what is covered. I don't buy travel insurance unless I'm going on a cruise. For a regular vacation in the U.S. involving flights - I'm willing to lose $75-$150/ticket (depending on the airline) if I have to cancel the ticket and rebook later.

I know that AAA's travel insurance covers job loss too. It will cover the cost of the entire trip, including airfare. All you are out is the money that you paid for the insurance.

There are guidelines for illness, natural disaster, personal harm to your house, etc. I always buy insurance. It is worth the piece of mind and the money.

I always buy travel insurance... I have it for our trip in December. I booked our trip through AAA, but I did the airline tickets myself. Our AAA agent added in the ticket price for the insurance total.

We needed the insurance once for our Disney trip 9/2000. My Mom was ill and I had to get home. We were able to get a flight home and transportation to the airport from the Beach Club all with one phone call (on a Sat.). My brother called me at 8am at the Beach Club and we were on a flight at 12:30pm.

The fee for the airline ticket change on both our flights back home, the days missed on our Disney room & tickets were all refunded after we got home. At the time I wasn't concerned about the refund, I just needed to get home:headache:...

We rented a townhouse in Windsor Hills this past January (we drove) and I bought just enough insurance to cover the rental cost.

You will need to read the "fine print" from your airline to see what is covered if you buy from them.

Good luck,
Bonnie

Very, very few (probably none) will cover you if you just decide not go on the trip.

Some will cover job loss.

The one I usually get (when I get it, which isn't often) is for students and includes things like failing a course and having to re-take it.

To me, a domestic trip with minimal cancellation costs (ie. $150 change/cancel fee is minimal) there is no reason to buy insurance.
