How do you go about estimating the cost of your DVC room for travel insurance purposes since we pay in points?

If you are doing a points stay, I think the only trip insurance available it that offered by MS. It's through TravelGuard (an excellent company) and it pays $5 per point lost due to a covered cause.

Independently of DVC, TravelGuard offers other travel insurance, but I'm pretty sure they will not insure points. If one is renting a reservation from an owner, or paying cash, TravelGuard will ensure the trip at face value.

We have used Travel Guard direct. A manager there used the average point rental rate from the DIS to determine the points value.

I just purchased this for our August visit since it's 317 points/hurricane season/parents getting older etc.......so i just did not want to take a chance....the cost is 5.15% of the reimbursment amount......
in our case 317pts x $5 = $1,585x .0515= $81.63

That's if you buy through Disney.

We bought direct and customized the policy to better suit our needs.
