If you rent points through an individual instead of a broker, will travel insurance payoff in the case of needing to file a claim? I'm sure purchasing it wouldn't be a problem, but if you had to file a claim is what I would be concerned with.

That will depends entirely on the policy you purchase. Some will cover rentals, and some will not.

Well that is concerning. I just assumed that they all would cover the rental if one was to go through a broker, but now that makes me think that some will not even cover that.

I know it's not a completely analogous situation, but as a DVC owner, I have been unable to find a travel plan (in Canada) that would cover the value of my points if I had to cancel.

My understanding is that even the insurance plan that is sold by DVC only covers the cost of the annual dues on the points if a member has to cancel their trip (which would only be about half their market value).

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I am can weigh in further.

I asked CAA before i booked our upcoming rental stay and the answer i got was "Yes it will cover any non-refundable travel expenses" I specifically asked about renting thru a broker and was told yes. I don't know if that will cover you if you rent privately however.

As a side note, if you're interested in going this route for your upcoming February stay, better get a move on since it's well beyond the 7 month mark.

check the various trip insurance agencies, I purchased travel insurance for our trip next month because we are traveling with my daughter and her family and didn't want to risk having them cancel and leave us paying for a larger size unit than we would need for just DH and I. I confirmed they would cover the points rental charge, purchased cancel for any reason coverage and found out that even if DD and family cancelled we could still use the rental and the insurance would pay the percentage of the cost that we paid for DD/family (50%)
