Ok, I'm a little confused! I plan to take out travel insurance with the AA today for our trip in May. Going with boyfriend but we don't live together.

According to the AA's FAQs....
Q: If my partner and I live at separate addresses can we still have the couple rate?
A: No you would have to buy separate policies. A couple is defined by the insurer as two adults aged 18 to 64 permanently living together.

I've just started applying through the website for the insurance and just put 2 in the "Adults aged 18-64" category. However, when I get to the personal details page it just asks for one address, therefore mine, and nowhere to input boyfriends :confused3 Judging by their response above does this mean I should really take out 2 totally separate policies? Can I not just put us on the same policy but obviously not under a couples rate?

Just don't want to mess this up!

As far as I know you will have to buy 2 lots of insurance. As you posted for a joint policy you have to be living at the same address. Not sure if there is a way around it.

Ahh right. Will that be the same pretty much everywhere then?!

Just now thinking my dad probably cocked up our policy last year as boyfriend came on holiday with us and I still live at home with parents and we were all on the one policy. Just as well we didn't have to claim!

Hopefully more will post to confirm or give you another option but I think it will be same with other companies.

Have you tried Ensleigh?

I use them a lot for insurance, and when I travelled with a female friend a few years back even we were able to get a 'couple' policy as they didn't have the living together clause. Could have changed now, but have a look. :)

Thanks :thumbsup2 Will check them out!

I got us travel insurance for DLP in May this year and just put 2 of us down, but because Florida is more expensive and further away I really don't want to be incorrectly covered! But never really thought about this before!

If you live at 2 different address unfortunately you will have to take out 2 different policies. I know it doesn't make sense but it's just the way the underwriters write policies. You could always call up the insurance company directly and see if the underwriters will allow you to take out a couples policy at one of the two addresses - they can only say no.

Thanks. Very strange! Would this make a difference if we have to claim though? Obviously we're going on the exact same holiday, will be together the whole time, so in the eventuality something goes wrong will it be ok as long as we both have our policies with the same insurer? Seems really daft as it works out the exact same price! I'd much rather we just be on the same policy!

I would ring the insurance company, there may be a way round it which is beyond the capability of a website (I know this can be the case for pre-existing medical conditions etc) I do know that insurance companies will use any excuse not to pay out so best not to take any chances, hope they can sort it out for you :goodvibes

I think alot of it come down to non-disclosure - you just need to make sure you have told them you live at to address and then it's upto the underwriters to assess the risk. They can over-ride it and put you on the same policy if they are happy with the "risk". I wouldn't chance it uncase you need to make a claim and then they decide to turn down your claim due to non-disclosure of the fact you are not living at the same address. I know, it doesn't seem logical but it happens.

My advice.... give them a call!

I was just trying to think what we used to do, as it's been a long time since DH and I lived seperatly!

I think we did take out individual policies as others have said the insurers don't need an excuse not to pay out so we just made seperate policies and that was that !:goodvibes

Yeah, see the thing that worries me is we've been on 3 holidays together before and have never had this issue before :confused3 Thank god we've never had to claim before or we could have had trouble!

I've e-mailed the AA (can't be bothered calling them, plus they're closed now) as I found this page which says they provide group travel insurance which in essence is what we are to them! I think I might just have overthought this and they'll probably just e-mail me back to say go ahead and put it under 1 address.

My mum said to just say boyfriend lives here, he's here 90% of the time anyway, but like you said I don't want to give them any excuse to not pay out if the need arose! Plus my view is they'd probably think "what else have we lied about?" if this was the case! Will report back if they get back to me incase it helps anyone else in the future :goodvibes

Just wanted to update I've had a reply from the AA :goodvibes I'm surprised as it's been less than 24 hours and it's a Sunday so didn't think it'd be so quickly. But this is what I have been told:

Good Morning and many thanks for your email.

You are welcome to continue on line with the travel insurance you require. Each person travelling just needs to be included in the correct age group. The address entered is just for mailing purposes and does not affect the insurance. As long as each person's name and age are added to the insurance correctly you can proceed on line.

:thumbsup2 Knew I'd be over-thinking this, lol. But maybe this will help someone in the future :)
