Hi all,
We are travelling in Oct. with my FIL who has Parkinson's. He also has some knee pain and other minor complications. I was thinking of getting some medical insurance for him. Any ideas on who has the best coverage and rates? Who do you use?
We already booked on airfare with Southwest and paid our cruise balance for Oct. travel.
Thanks.

:scared1: I would NEVER think of travelling without medical insurance if there is a prior concern. Don't forget that the level of coverage we are used to getting (hand over OHIP card and everthing is fine) will not be a possibility.
We use CAA for ours since it is just convient (oh who knows how to spell that word this early!!) Mom uses Blue Cross for dad since he has had 3 major heart attacks. CHeck it out and do not i repeat DO NOT go with out. 'k?
Have a great holiday knowing that all is well. :cool1:

I would never travel without medical insurance-the cost in the States is astronomical. We've always used CAA for ours, but this year I checked into TD Insurance . I did the online quote and it was oodles less than CAA. I called them, got the same quote, and bought. The CSR gave me the 800 number to call, and he reassured me that by calling the number, the dr/hospital would be reimbursed up front. Check them out. Good luck, and have fun!

As other posters have said - if you (or your immediate family) are not covered through work with 'out of country medical' then you should NOT travel across the border without purchasing it.

I use RBC. :thumbsup2

I was hospitalized that summer for 2 days due to an infection from a pedicure (cost of the hospital and clinic treatments = over $6000). I had my insurance through CAA. I had to call prior to going to the hospital to see what they would cover (100%). CAA had great service: called family, called me at the hospital, followed up when I was released and gave me numbers of doctors near WDW if I had to be re-admitted.

Your FIL might have a hard time getting insurance because of his prior conditions so you might have to call a few places. Have a great trip!

I am with Debbie we use TD travel insurance we have it year round also because you never know when you may be out someplace away from home even a quick trip out of town it is there to help.

The important thing for your FIL to find out is the conditions under which they will or will not cover pre existing conditions. Some insurances will be cheaper up front and not ask a lot of qualifying questions however when reading the fine print they won't cover anything pre exisiting. While others may cost more but cover pre existing conditions provided they have been stable.

A note with CAA in South western Ontario....as of right now you don't need to be a member to purchase the insurance.

You will have to let the agency that you are booking the coverage through about any existing problems. For instance if he has cancer they will need to know that.

There are quite a few insurance companies in Ontario that will cover preexisting conditions as long as you've got a valid OHIP card. We bought the WDW ins only to find out they cover a whopping 10 000 worth of medical expenses. Whoopee. :sad2: Couldnt get a refund and bought travel ins from Meloche Monnex. Covers our whole family for a year for less than the WDW ins for one trip. Also includes cancellation for all future trips (we were too far past paying for this trip for cancellation to be included for this one but medical is.)

That is the exact coverage we have from Meloche Monnex it was 80 bucks for the year for our family of 5.

The price for ours was a bit higher. 110 I think for a family of 4. The price is based solely on the age of the oldest member of the family. DH is 38.

Even at 110 it is cheap piece of mind knowing what the cost of health care in the US is for sure.
