Travel Insurance for renting DVC Points?

Hello! Looking at renting DVC points but given the fact I have a toddler and had to cancel last years vacation because of sickness, I want to make sure we have insurance as a back up.

However, reading through the fine print on Allianz's website, it doesn't seem like it covers what would be called "peer to peer" as in - person to personal rental, such as renting DVC points.

Has anyone found a place that would cover this? Or purchased travel insurance and had to use it as a renter?

Appreciate any thoughts and guidance!

No personal experience, but I remember reports of renters being reimbursed by insurance when they rented from an agency rather than an individual, because they had the rental contract and an invoice from the agency. The insurance treated it as similar to a hotel reservation.

I’m wondering if I still have a contract with a person & an invoice if that would fly 😬

Yes, this was my experience. David's gave me appropriate documentation and the carrier covered it without question. I suspect just a private contract would be questioned.

YMMV and I'm sure the naysayers will come out of the woodwork basically acting as if I'm lying as they do every time I give my experience 🤥 🙄🙃

It is good to hear of someone who was actually able to use the travel insurance. It will put others who rent at ease that there is a policy out there that can be used to cover them!!!

Which insurance did you have? I got Travel Guard once and they said they would cover vacation rentals but thankfully I didn’t have to use it. I am hoping they would cover it as stated but would love to hear which insurance you had that did cover it!

YMMV

A couple of comments - I had a cancel for any reason (CFAR) policy that included COVID. It also took what seemed like forever for them to pay, but that was pandemic backlog and nothing claim specific.

Eta: the main thing was being able to show the reservation was nonchangeable and nonrefundable.

This is one of the reasons I ended up buying DVC resale instead of renting. I have never heard of a successful story of someone being paid on a claim for money spent to rent points from an individual. I would assume that this purchase is nonrefundable and non-insurable. If you have a young child and cancellation due to illness is a possibility, then renting is probably not a good option for you.

Edit: I see that someone upthread posted a successful story (the first one I’ve ever seen) of a claim against an agency rental. That’s great. I’d still be highly cautious if it’s just an individual you’re renting from and not an agency.

Me too! I couldn't find a travel insurance that was clear on point rentals and I am too risk averse to rent points again after the pandemic. I would book a cash room if my teen was a toddler.

I rented through someone and we used Travel Guard. Hurricane Dorian hit and we were able to get our money back. I sent them a copy of the contract and cancelled checks. Now so many people use Venmo or PayPal so not sure how that will work.
