We're thinking about getting travel IDs for the cruise as we don't have passports.
We're way too short on time to get it done the normal way though - does anyone know if you can expedite this process?
If not we'll just go with birth certificates.

I've never heard of a Travel ID. Anyone else have any insight?
Normally folks travel with a Passport, or a Driver's License (or State ID) or Birth Certificates.

Are you talking about the Passport card?

That is the new Real ID, and having one will be required for air travel beginning in May. I do not think this will replace the need to also have your birth certificate

Real ID is only for the flying portion of your trip. You will still need a Passport or Birth Certificate in most instances for foreign travel on a cruise ship.

If you don't have a passport or passport card, and you are flying after May 3, 2023, yes, you will have to go to the MVD and pay to have the gold star added to your AZ Drivers License in order to go through TSA. Otherwise, it does not replace a passport, passport card (international travel) or a birth certificate and gov't issued ID for closed loop cruises originating in the US.

RealID only proves - as much as possible - your identity. It does not prove your citizenship.
I just had to laugh at this. In Arizona, in order to get a Travel ID, the main document you have to provide is proof of citizenship. If it was just an ID, we wouldn't have to get a special Travel ID, a simple driver's license would suffice.

But, with that being said, Travel ID is really only good for TSA.

Not according to the link above.
Not only do they prove identity, they also show citizenship. Either way, its basically just for domestic airport travel for TSA use.

I did go through the process of getting one because I didn't want to have to remember to take my passport when I fly domestically, when I always have my driver's license with me.

No, they don’t. Or, might not. You can use a birth certificate from a country other than the US. If you look further, it mentions using things like an i94 form which is specifically for non-citizens.
