Is is OK to use a TA just for air transportation? I have never used a TA before so I don't know when it would be beneficial to me. We live in the Grand Rapids area so our air transportation options are plentiful. We could leave from GR, Lansing, Detroit or Chicago and that leads to a lot of price comparisons. I don't know if a TA could find me the best deal or if I am just as likely to stumble upon one myself. I already have my lodging, tickets, etc taken care of so I really just need airfares. Any advice?

It's okay, but even if a Travel Agent could find you the best price, you'd pay for it. Since the airlines stopped paying a commission to TAs for airline ticket sales, the TAs have started charging a fee PER PASSENGER for that service. For example, AAA charge $10 per round-trip ticket for members and I think $20 for non-members.

you might try to see if the airport websites can check and compare flights of various airlines . We live in Louisville and the airport website will pull up flights with the prices for most of the airlines. Southwest is one you have to book directly and doesn't show up, but there are others. Travelocity is a good source and Expedia, but if you have discount airlines, I would check their websites directly.

Try looking at http://www.kayak.com it brings up all your options through airline websites and the other sites like orbitz, cheaptickets etc. Helped me find $117 r/t tickets for our family!
