Travel after banking deadline?

Already planning a trip for after my banking deadline! My banking deadline is May 31st, and I really only anticipate us doing WDW in June or July. But, the thing is, those are summer vacation trips and planned months in advance. Where we live (and the jobs for me and my wife), those dates are often set in January and pretty well respected - that's when people start registering for summer camps and a lot of people around here vacation at the Jersey Shore, which requires booking months in advance. I'm not very worried about work getting in the way of those trips. I suppose other life stuff can always throw a curveball your way, but that can happen anytime.

If I did have to cancel for some reason, I'd probably try first to rent it out as a confirmed reservation heavily discounted. If that failed and wasn't able to reschedule before end of UY, I'd probably throw the points into Interval International (but remember that has to happen 45 days before the end of your UY - I looked recently because the resale contract I just bought happened to have 2 points that expired the day after the points loaded to my account).
Good thing about June travel with an Oct UY is you can cancel 31+ days in advance and STILL bank 🔥

I try very hard to avoid it but we have a big trip planned in Jan on a Feb use year contract using two years worth of points. I'm petrified there will be some big snow storm, sickness, airline snafu, etc. I did it because it's the only time everyone can go, but I'm never doing it again lol.

:tink: :tink: :tink: :tink: :tink: :tink: :tink: :tink:that all goes well.

My deadline is March 31 and I'm always either still in FL or on the plane (snowbird past several years.
I simply Bank points online on my phone if desperate.on the 30th.

It has never been a problem, as long as I write myself a Reminder note (my iphone Reminders never remind me for some reason).

If I were smarter and wanted to use the points, I feel like at least they're'safe' and the decision will have to wait.

If this were me, I'd for sure being buying trip insurance.

I recently looked at this. My CCV resale contract with an Oct UY loaded to my DVC account 9/29. I knew there were 2 points that would expire 9/30 (broker didn’t even include it in their listing). Signed on to II to see if I could deposit them because, why not? Apparently, they have to be deposited 45 days prior to the end of your UY.
Thank you that is good to know. I just assumed you could use them up until the last day of your use year.

Once your transfer them in to II, my understanding is that you have until the end of the second calendar year following the year in which you transferred them. So, it definitely does extend their life, so to speak, but not if you miss that 45 day deadline.

Do you ever travel after your banking deadline? I’m realizing my favorite travel times will probably be Jan/Feb (every year) and sometimes March, June or August. I might even travel to Disneyland in October. This means any August or later trips will be after my banking deadline since my use year is December.

Do you have rules about travel after banking deadlines? Should I just YOLO it and worry about repercussions later if it comes down to a last minute cancellation? Dump any stranded points in Interval maybe? Any advice? Not really interested in a second use year!
I travel when I want to and when it makes sense based on the kids school schedule and plane flight costs.

I had booked a trip for early May which is right after my banking deadline. It didn’t concern me too much since we had a little room to pivot - try to rent or reschedule over summer. But then Moonlight Magic dates released and I moved it to April 😂 Oh goodness! Blew about 60-70 extra points making the switch just to have a chance to attend.

We decided what the heck. Bonus that it might not be as hot, and we had 2 studios booked for May and later wished we had taken 1BR instead, which was gone for May but still open April over Moonlight Magic dates released. It’s all good!

I’d still try May again even though it’s in our banking window for Sept UY.

Yes I just did this. I always transfer and combine points. I will admit i change my mind a lot and need to be more careful with that. MS has come to my rescue more than once to fix things but I also think that comes with the excitement of being new and wanting to stay at the "popular" resorts as they come available.

So far ive only traveled to WDW in September and we loved it. My dec uy banking deadline is in july.

We had two bedrooms booked so it was a lot of points at risk, but the goal was a fall trip so if someone got sick I suppose we would have just tried for a week later and hopefully okw or SSR would be available. Def not a risk im so comfortable with.

Im glad we got the december uy to cover Christmas because we are very interested in that, but our fall trips are going to be risky combining points.

My solution is to buy poly to match our december uy. With two contracts on each uy we should be able to cover our trips without combining points. I think more than one uy works great if you go twice a year at different times.

You will have to watch that. It seems like people start walking these trips before December 1st when your points are loaded.

Not sure what your other UY is but it might actually be better simply because of the walkers.

Ive heard about this and that really sucks. In my mind ill be staying at wilderness lodge, vgf and akv club level 🤣🤣

The other uy is feb which means id be past banking deadline, so I guess no matter what ill be at risk 🤣🤣 but then again, walking doesnt really work that great at 7 months anyways does it?

I think with our preferred room types at our home resorts (akv sv Studio, blt tpv Studio) we could be fine 😬 If not i have SSR priority too 🤣

We joined DVC impulsively back in '08. We joined direct and were only offered a December UY. We even talked with the guide how we traveled fairly exclusively in the August, September, October timeframe. It didn't change the UY available. She just made some banal remark about traveling in the Spring. We did have to cancel a September trip in '24 due to an unexpected surgical procedure and the CM put everything into the next year. This past August our eldest's vacation was derailed as the auto train was unable to complete it's course due to an accident and, once again, the DVC CM placed all points - except for some OTU points - into the following year. So if it is a health issue or an 'act of God' issue DVC will work to save points.

Im glad to hear everything worked out, its really hit or miss with the CMs sympathy, but I find that calling yields much better results than chatting
