We aren't getting married on DCL but will be honeymooning with them.

Does anyone know how (if it's even possible) I would go about booking a private "trash the dress" session at Castaway Cay? Can we also include characters?

Characters will cost you plenty. Upwards of $500 for one character for 30 mins (this was from a few years ago). You can call and ask about a private photo session on CC. My son and DIL had a private photo session on CC after they got engaged onboard. It did not cost extra. the characters are what will cost.

And, I am just throwing it out there....not sure if trashing a dress is something Disney would have an image issue with (having the characters involved). I know it is done by some after weddings, just don't know about with the characters. Again have no idea, it was just a thought.

I think your best bet is to inquire with Disney directly - dcl.function.requests@disney.com. I don't know whether you could get characters to participate or not. I would guess if you just wanted a picture standing in the water that might be OK, but if you want to picture where you are setting your dress on fire, or something like that, I don't think they would let the characters be in a picture like that.

Try checking for photographers within your cruise meet up group. I am a photographer and would love to do a session like this at CC. I am cruising in September. I am certainly not soliciting but if a fellow cruiser asked, I would definitely consider it.

ETA using a private photograher would not allow characters. Not sure how important the characters would be for you.

Sounds like,a great idea. Trash the dress is all the rage, brides usually get a second (much cheaper) dress to have photos taken in water or a fountain. They get really cool photos, but the dress is usually ruined. I used to volunteer at a military spouses thrift shop and we would sell used wedding dresses and evening gowns specifically for this purpose!

you might also ask on the wedding boards specifically about brides who have done this. my two cents is that typically the photographers on board aren't of the caliber that (hopefully) are doing your wedding photography or even that of disney fine art photography (which tends to be extremely uneven although improving over the years) so although you can definitely do something, i would have low expectations about the quality of pictures as compared to typical wedding photography. you can wear a dress on CC or on board (not limited like it is in the parks etc..) and private photographers have definitely done TTD so you can do that. as others have said, characters are upwards of $800/30" for one and ~$1200 or something for two and there would be limitations of what they my do or pics they can take. :thumbsup2

I would not say to have low expectations of a photographer just because they are on board a Disney cruise! I have been a photographer for 10 years and I would say I AM of the caliber to do it, and do it well. If you find one, evaluate their portfolio, don't write them off just because they are cruising.o_O

I think the issue would be someone wearing a wedding dress that hadn't had a proper Disney wedding or renewal (more importantly, PAID FOR a proper Disney w or r onboard). Even if you just walk right into the water in it, I think their need for total control will call a halt to the plans.

I think the PP was more referring to the quality of Shutters photographers, not other passengers who do happen to be photographers (assuming the OP was planning on arranging the shoot with Shutters/DCL's photography).

I do know of plenty of TTD that have been done on Castaway Cay, but each one that I personally know of was done by a couple that had a DCL wedding/vow renewal (and in all these cases, brought their own photographer onto the ship for the main event). I also wouldn't trust the quality of Shutters for something like this myself, nor am I entirely convinced they'd do it.

and when you book any event thru disney/DCL anywhere, IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY YOU WILL BE CHOOSING SOMEONE BASED ON THEIR PORTFOLIO OF WORK. you MAY get a name and MAY get a sample piece of work, but you are not guaranteed specific photographers and the bulk of photography on the ships (not all) offered by DCL is more akin to photos than fine art photography (shutters). if you want to bring someone on your own and try it, the pictures may be better, more opportunity to edit and have more pictures. thats all i am saying.bring the question up on the wedding boards - you might get some good tips!

Yeah, I misunderstood. I meant to check on your cruise boards to see if someone traveling on your cruise happened to be a photographer, then check their portfolio. I get that with DCL photographers you never know what you will get.

Hopefully, for a price DCL will do anything, or almost anything.

As long as it isn't indecent, I don't see what the issue would be with wearing a wedding dress?

When I was in collage, I used to go out to goth clubs in a wedding dress I bought at salvation army. I later dismantled it and built a Corpse Bride Halloween costume from it. :P

You think so?? That seems awfully controlling of them to do that. Hmmmm...

I did a Trash the Dress session on the second leg of our honeymoon cruise in 2012. We have photographers (our wedding ones from earlier that month) come with us and they took the photos. Their names are David and Vicki Arndt. My husband and I did parasailing in our wedding attire and they got really great shots on castaway cay and the ship (which we did before getting off to trash f course). I would highly recommend contacting David and Vicki they do TONS of Trash the dress, Disney Weddings and Disney Cruise Weddings!

Here is a link to some of my photos: http://www.dvarndtblog.com/2012/09/the-disney-fantasy-cruiseline-bridal.html

I say GO FOR IT!! We had so much fun :) and was a great honeymoon memory.

We did one in 2012 (see post above) and had no issues from anyone on the ship. We even parasailed on Castaway with no issues either. We didn't get married on the ship. So it is possible and is very easy to do. No one will bother you or say anything about it. You could walk in your wedding dress around the ship all week if you really wanted ;) DCL is very accommodating unlike the parks on land.
