Transporting Beverages

Does anyone have stories to tell about taking packaged beverages on the ship? My husband thinks we can pack a 12/pk of beer and soda in our checked luggage, but I'm concerned it won't survive the flight. Our flight is only a little over 2 hrs. Do the airports have a problem with this? Any experiences to share?

Unless you want stinky, wet clothes, I woudn't try to pack drinks for the flight. I don't remember the thread name but there have already been many reports of exploded drinks when transported via airplane. Even if you wrap them tightly in plastic, you still run the risk of exploded drinks.

If you can, it would be safer to pick up drinks prior to boarding. If you just don't have time to shop before getting on board, wrap the drinks carefully and just cross all fingers and toes that nothing pops.

I don't thinkI would pack anything like beer or soda in your checked luggage going onto the plane. The pressure difference may be enough to make the cans explode..... what a mess. I may be mistaken, but I don't think the luggage compartments are pressurized the same way the passenger cabin is, and I don't know how well they are heated.

Buy what you need when you get there.....

I remember reading a post from one person, and their luggage didn't contain any beverages, but their clothes were ruined from beverages exploding in someone elses luggage and getting on their clothing. If I remember correctly it ruined their formal attire.
not a way to start your cruise.
You could always purchase stuff in Key West and bring it on board with you if you can't get to a store before boarding.

Last year for our Christmas Reunion cruise I took champagne and champagne flutes for the adults (6 bottles and 12 glasses) and packed the wine in our carry-ons with no problem. They did search 2 of the 3 carry--ons and let us through. If a precruise stop is out of the question, could you pack it in your carry-on luggage (ours rolled so the extra weight wasn't a problem). If you decide to try, call your airport security to see if it will be a problem.

As an ex airline employee ( thanks Bin Laden) I would not recommend you putting any kind of beverage in your checked luggage. The cargo bins are not pressurized and it is very likely that your cans will burst. When we went on the 9/28 cruise, we stopped at a convience store on the way to the cruise and picked up two twelve packs. We put one in a soft sided cooler which we checked at the port and had delivered to the stateroom. The other I carried on board. I could have payed for my entire cruise by selling the beer in the terminal. There were lots of 'thirsty" people in line that day. The others in my party (total of 11) brought along some adult beverages of their own as well. I think I bought one beer the entire week.

When we picked up our luggage on Saturday, the porter said want to see a good reason not to pack liquor in your suitcase? There in a tub was someone's suitcase soaking wet with broken liquor bottles. This was just from leaving the ship and going into the port. He said people think their clothes will pad the bottles, but they are wrong.

We purchased a Pepsi "cube" and carried it on board. These are packages of 24 sodas and it worked perfect for us.

Take it from me -- DON'T DO IT!!

I packed some red wine in a checked bag with clothes some years ago and needless to say, I got a free dye job.

I have carried unopened bottles on board w/o any trouble (pre- and post - 9/11). And I have transported case wine that was packed by the winery as checked luggage, no trouble. But never again in a suitcase with clothes.

We are taking a towncar from the airport to the port. One of the reasons why we chose that route was the 1/2 hr grocery stop included. We can stop and pick up soda and beer.I bought one of those softsided coolers with wheels 1/2 price at the end of September. It folds flat in the suitcase, we can fill it up at the store and wheel it on board.

Point taken!!! Thanks everyone for all the warnings! Guess I'll come up with other options! Natt
