You are travelling to a different country and to a country where you dont speak the language. What you expect an American driver to do may not be how a French driver does things. Most of the time drivers are honest and tourist friendly. However I have been travelling internationally for over 20 years, I have lived and worked in multiple countries, and at this stage I have visited over 10 European countries, as well as multiple US States. There times when I have had drivers who have tried to drive the long way when the fare is metered or have tried to drop me at a wrong location, or drivers who suddenly dont understand English.

Im not saying that this will happen to you. But having Google maps downloaded on your phone and the route mapped out, is just good planning, as others have been dropped off at the wrong location. It prevents a misunderstanding when you are in the car.
