i'm planning on staying on-site for the first time - i'd like to get to a supermarket on day 1 to get some items - should i rent a car from the airport for 24 hrs then return it on property? which one is on property? Or should i take a cab to the supermarket?
also, what is the transportation to & from WDW - airport? how much does it cost or is it provided for free? thanks.

I assume you are flying into Orlando airport? I would use a car service.....especially if you have a lot of people. Or you could use Mears....van service that stops at everyone on the van's hotel to drop them off. The advantage of using car service (Happy Limo, Tiffany) is you can get a 15 or 30 minute grocery stop included. If you want to rent a car (which may cost more with gas and tolls), I am pretty sure Avis has a rental place in the Hilton at Downtown Disney. You may want to put this question on the Transportation Board......good luck!

You'll really need to take a pencil and paper to work out the numbers. If you go the rental car route, National is located inside the airport and they have a center located right on Disney property. A 24 hour full size rental is about $45. The car will hold 5 people. Now the question is, how are you going to get back to the airport at the end of your vacation. You could always purchase a Mears one-way ticket for $17 per adult and $13 per child. The other option is to go with a town car service which includes a grocery stop. That price is in the area of $80 for the roundtrip (from airport to resort then resort back to airport). It really depends on how many people are in your group, as to what the better solution might be for you.

Avoid the hassle and time wasted renting a car and go with Tiffany....you get a grocery stop and it is so easy! Our main thing is get there ASAP!!!

What about the WeGoShop option???, while I haven't tried that, yet- I have read some really great posts from people who have used this shopping service, and honestly I always hate arriving with bags and grocery bags and all that water I usually have to truck around. And the transportation from the airport--I would use the most cost efficient for your group (but not Mears--we will NEVER do that again)

We used to use Tiffany's, but the price has gone up quite a bit recently. I believe it is $95 round trip + a tip puts this at over $100. I also don't want to ever use Mears again - takes too long to get to the resort.

Last month we rented a car from National (using Quickrent option) & it was great. No rental counters to deal with or anything - just hopped in the car & drove to our resort to check in. I think it was $2.50 in tolls to the POP & we put a couple dollars of gas in, too. We checked in & dropped the car off at the Dolphin Resort's drop off center & went to a park from there.

We only had the car a couple hours on both arrival & departure days. I think one day our cost was $42, and coming back it was only $27. For a total of $69 + a couple dollars in tolls/gas - this option was so much cheaper than a towncar service. We saved enough for the 2 of us to fit in another character meal. :)

There's lots of great info about this over on the Transportation Board - HTH! :)

i will check out the transportation board. we'll have 2 or 3 adults & 2 small children so i have to plan on 5. we definitely need groceries, too. i'll have to see how convenient or inconvenient it is to pick up & drop off a rental car - how expensive a town car is, etc. So much planning...thanks for your help.
