Translation needed for Brit!

I have been reading my unofficial guide, and there were a couple of food items that I didn't know what they were, and wondered if someone on the other side of the Atlantic could translate for me?
I know about fries (chips) and chips (crisps) and biscuits (scones) and cookies (biscuits) but what are sloppy joes and quesadillas?

Sloppy Joes...depends on who you ask. There are 2 variations. One is kind of a 'loose meat' sandwich, ground beef sauteed with a tomato-based sauce, served on a roll. The other version is a quite yummy sandwich style, where you get turkey, or another deli meat, served on rye bread usually with coleslaw and russian dressing (and sometimes swiss cheese). The 'traditional' version of a sloppy joe is the first one (unless you ask my DH)

A Quesadilla is Mexican (Tex-Mex) treat! you take soft tortillas and fill them with cheese, chicken, peppers, onions, etc, there are many variations on them, and they are grilled or pan fried so the cheese melts. Usually served with sour cream and guacamole - very very yummy! It's kind of like a Mexican grilled cheese sandwich!

Sloppy joes are ground meat (beef or pork) with ketchup or barbecue sauce and sometimes onion cooked and served on a hamburger bun (very good if made right). I do not know what quesadillas are as I do not eat Mexican food at all.

A sloppy joe is ground beef (usually) or ground turkey that is mixed with a tomato based sauce that has onion powder and maybe chopped onions or green peppers. Kinda like chilli without the beans. It's placed between 2 buns.

Quesadillas could be with melted cheese alone or with cheese and grilled chicken. Its pressed between 2 flour tortillas. Usually found in Mexican restaurants or as an appetizer in some casual restaurants.

A quesadilla is two soft shell tortillas stuffed with cheese, meat and veggies (depending on the type) and grilled/fried until everything is melty.* Like a cheesy tortilla pizza.* These are yummy!

Sloppy joes are a like a loose meat hamburger. So instead of a patty made of ground beef, it's loose ground beef in a seasoned tomato sauce. It's thick and messy but delicious!

Quesadillas are tortillas with melted cheese inside. They have other fillings too, sometimes meat and veggies and spices. It just depends where you get it from!

Hope that helped. On of my favorite authors is British and it took me awhile to catch on to the biscuit and crisps thing. The hardest was M & S. We don't have Marks and Spencers here!

Sloppy Joe = Cooked Ground Meat with a thick tomato based sauce
and mixer is placed between hamburger buns (large rolls) to eat--
this is why it's called sloppy. I have no idea where the Joe comes from.

Quesidillas= is a Mexican Grilled Cheese sandwich but instead of using
bread--tortillas are used. Cheese melted between the tortillas.
Tortillas are a Very Flat Bread.

lol, that's a Reuben (though its usually corned beef, not turkey. never heard it referred to as a Sloppy Joe. Where is DH from?

Sorry but person up the chain is right at least around here. Rueben in my neck of the woods is corned beef, kraut, melted swiss.

If you've never heard of a quesadilla, then you probably won't know how to pronounce it correctly when ordering. It sounds like kay-suh-dee-uh with the accent on "dee". Hope that helps!

In NJ, a sloppy joe is more commonly the cold sandwich. It is a staple in every deli in Northern NJ. The below link does a good job describing it, and has a picture.

That's funny, because in South Jersey, a sloppy joe is definitely the tomato sauce one. The picture you linked would be a turkey "special" or reuben- just like corned beef. Funny how we're only an hour or so apart, yet so different.

We have the loose meat version too, they just aren't as prevelant. A Sloppy Joe (as I know it) is a monster of a sandwich. If anyone is fnear Edison, NJ, or is familiar with RoadFood from Gourmet magazine or The Splendid Table found on public radio or in podcasts you'll apprericate this link

Oh and a sloppy joe is a sandwich made from ground meat and a sauce made from either from a McCormick spice packet and a can of tomato paste or a can of Manwich.
