"Transitions" eye glass wearers, your help is requested!!!!!!!

My transition lenses get clear inside - these aren't like my mother's glasses at all!! ;)

I love the convenience - love, love, love it. The driving thing is not an issue to you, so that's good. I find it's not that much of an issue for me either cuz I'm usually driving such short distances. (Longer trips DH usually drives)

Speaking of DH, he saw how great my transitions were, so he went and got his own pair. He uses his old clip-ons for driving, but loves the transitions.

:) Good luck with what you decide.

Maybe if I put on some bellbottoms and let my hair grow back into the David Cassidy 'do I used to have many many years ago, I wouldn't mind.

Anyone else agree with the above statements?

Yes, I agree - I think you should put on those bellbottoms and grow your hair out!! A nice hukapoo shirt should finish the look quite nicely :lmao:

I am glad I saw this thread.....I have more questions! Just got my eyes checked and they are getting progressively worse of course! I have progressive bifocals and need hi-index so they don't look so thick. I want to get a pair of sunglasses but I am being told that they cannot tint the lenses dark if I get scratch-resistent coating that make the lenses last longer! They are telling me to go with transition lenses but I am also concerned about them becoming clear inside and getting dark enough outside, as my eyes are very sensitive to bright light. Has anyone tried the transition lens with bifocal prescrition?? TIA!

I have transition lenses with bifocals and they work just fine..

My mother has transitions with bifocals and I have transitions with single vision and they work great. My classroom is in a mobile unit so I walk back and forth outside several times a day. They go dark in the the 30 seconds or so that it takes me to get the the mobile and go clear within 30 seconds of me going inside.

Thanks Jess!

FYI to the other posters, we live in NYC and don't have a car, hence the driving component is not an issue at all.

That's good, I got rid of polarized lenses because I can't stand looking at the wavy lines and little numbers in the back windows of cars!

I work for an Ophthalmologist and glasses have come a long way since '79! You will be impressed with how light the lenses are compared to five years ago even.

The transitions lenses have gotten much clearer than you might remember, but I am not sure the Opticians I work with would say that it is crystal. I was a skeptic about anti reflective coating, but as a person who absolutely hates the smearing (which my coworkers say has gotten much better in the past two years) of AR coating, it will make everything clearer in any light!!!
I was unable to drive at night at all until I got AR coating. It gives your visual acuity a preciseness to it.

If you wear contacts, I would go to the optical shop wearing your contacts, and ask if you can put them on and if you can walk outside to get an idea of how clear they are, and how quickly they turn and turn back to see if you like them.

Good luck, most people like the transitions, I think you would too.

I tried them a few years ago, but my problem was that they didn't get dark enough in the sun, especially when driving, when they hardly changed at all.

I have the same problem with mine right now. When we went to Disney I had so many headaches the first couple of days cause of being out in the sun and my glasses not getting dark enough. After that I finally got use to the sun being so bright. But that was the whole reason I bought transition glasses for was to avoid headaches when out in the sun.

Same goes for being in the car. They never get dark, at all, while in the car. Summertime is bad enough, but when there is snow on the ground and the sun is hitting it, it's next to impossiable for me to see anything. And I have yet to find a pair of clip ons :crazy2: that will fit onto my glasses right.

I just found this thread and I am thinking of getting transition lenses. Such great info. Thanks for posting rickinNYC! Someone here posted that when you get your pictures taken with transition lenses on, your glasses will always be dark. Has anyone else experienced this?

2 of my kids (3yo and 6yo) just got transitions. My 7yo really wants them too. I have not seen them looking dark in pictures, though. Now I will have to try it out and let you all know.

I will experiment and post in a little while

I had to get rid of mine and get separate sunglasses and glasses because they are dark enough that they hide my eyes and people can't see my facial expression well.
This was crucial for sign language interpreting. I am now considering contacts for when I am interpreting.

ok, not the best photography ever...Rosie doesn't WANT her picture taken today, so won't get out of the corner! But here ya go...transitions lenses in a picture.

I have had transitions that didn't get dark enough and some that didn't get clear enough after going indoors, but I still prefer them to a separate pair of sunglasses.

The glasses I have now are the best I've ever had. They get as dark as I want and clear up nicely once indoors. For the car, they have a fitted magnetic dark lens that goes on as easy as touching them to the frame. The tinted car windows do not let in enough of the rays that turn the transitions dark, so you need something that's already dark. The only prblem I have is I tend to forget to take the attachment sunglasses off when I get out of the car. I am quickly reminded as soon as I walk inside, though.

I don't know what brand of glasses or transition application I have, but I got them at Cohen's Fashion Optical in the Palisades Mall in West Nyack. Ask for Dimitri.

I have to be very careful with my glasses as I have had lazer surgery for narrow angle lense (a type of glaucoma) and am very sensitive to bright lights. I give my progressive bifocal transitional lenses :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2.
My ophthalmologist showed me examples under uvlamp and even gave me a choice of percentage and choice of color grey or bronze. True, they may not get as dark as you'd like while driving, but for me they are a true lifesaver!

DH was so impressed in how much they've changed over the yrs, he recently got a pair and loves them!! :goodvibes

transitions are great for some people and for some rx. you said you needed hi index lenses, well transitions DOES add thickness to your lenses. We use crizal alize lenses, some of the more high end AR (anti-glare) coating that works great with transitions....

sometimes they wont recommned both coating because once you get the ar on your lenses, the transitions wont get as dark.

I have transitions with progressive bifocals and they work great for me. They don't get as dark as regular sun glasses but after wearing them for awhile my eyes adjusted fine. They do get light when I come indoors too.

I'll never get Transitions lenses again. Like others have said; they have a slight color to them all the time, even indoors, and I don't like that. Maybe on a guy it wouldn't be so bad. LOL And they get NO WHERE near dark enough outside in the sunlight. I still use prescription sunglasses when I'm driving or when I know I'll be outdoors for a period of time (not just running out to the mailbox, for example).

P.S. Mine also are progressive bi-focals.

Like you, my eyes are sensitive to light. I have been wearing light-sensitive lenses since they were first available and with bifocals since I needed them. They work perfectly, essentially clear indoors, and I wouldn't give them up for anything. I do like the fact that they can color only slightly with that slight brightness that can make you squint and be uncomfortable. Yet they are truly dark when necessary.

The optician who made my last pair (not Lenscrafters or Pearle Vision) told me, though, that there are different qualities of plastic Transitions and, as with most things, the more expensive work better.

My last pair of transitions lenses are 3 years old. They never turn clear. ALways a gray type of color. Also, they don't turn dark enough to really help when the sun is super strong. I'm not sure if some brands are better than others or if technology has improved.
Anyway, I just bought some new glasses a couple of months ago and I bought the frameless with the clip on sunglasses. So far so good.

I wont ever get Transition lenses again either. Mine were always a light grey inside and never dark enough for driving or in the FL sun. I got a pair of clip ons that fit my glasses exactly at Walmart in the sun glass section. They were about $8.
I also don't like the fact that in outdoor photos I am the one with the dark glasses on. My son had an outdoor wedding and until I realized the glasses were dark I had no photos of me without the shades covering my eyes. I finally took them off but I am blind without glasses and I couldn't see a thing.
In the photo of me dancing with my son there were so many flash bulbs going off that even though we were inside my glasses darkened a bit.
So my new glasses are clear lenses and I again got a clip on from Walmart that fits this new frame exactly. Peggie

Contrary to what people think, the glasses turn dark because of UV rays, not because of light. That is why your glasses stay clear in the car. There is no way for the UV rays to reach your lenses to turn the glasses dark. So, it is impossible for a light bulb or flash bulb to turn your glasses dark because they don't use UV rays. I wear my transition glasses everyday. While there is a slight tint, it is unnoticeable. I have no problems seeing at all, and I am in front of a computer all day. :surfweb:
