I have a DS 10 months who is having difficulty with a sippy cup - both with and without the straw. I admit, I have mostly let him use teh bottle b/c it's easier as a result. I want to change that though - so any recommendation re transition to and the type of sippy cup that worked for you?

Yep -- try the Nuby cops with the soft spouts. They are fantastic first sippy cups. I have seen them at target, walmart and BRU.

DS didn't actually really understand how to use a sippy till around 14 or 15 months old, he found a straw cup so much easier before that. That being said we love the Nuby straw cups and the Foogo straw cups.

I have tried several over the past 3 years. DS did great on the gerber transitions ones--neither one liked the NUBY, DD does not like the gerber, but loves the MUNCHKIN ones that look like the NUBY--the spout is a little different. THere are two kinds-one with handles and one without. I can only find them at Target.

my dd just made the transition from bottle to sippy cup at the end of oct and at first the only ones I could get her to drink from were the ones w/out plugs in them (first years, boon, and even the throw away cups) since then I have been able to get her to drink from the avent and the gerber graduates cups. we like the boon the best b/c she doesn't get as messy drinking from them.

I really don't like sippy cups -- from a speech habit they encourage bad habits, from a spilling perspective they don't let kids learn from their mistakes. I also don't like the practice of letting kids carry around a cup all day.

DS had some feeding issues and didn't really "drink" until he was 2 and we went straight to an open cup or a straw cup if we really needed it spill proof, like on an airplane. Between meals he drank water -- which is not a big deal to clean up, and if he had juice or milk at dinner we were already in the kitchen where spills are manageable.

If I get to do it again, I'll go straight to an open cup, but that's just me.

DD's daycare uses Take 'n Toss sippies with the infants. DD began using one at 6 months and is now a pro at 10 months! They do leak a bit, but that makes it easier for them to use since their not having ot suck so hard to get the liquid out. I would recommend the Take 'n Toss before spending $$ on more advanced sippies.

Our 1st would use whatever...take n toss, nuby, Gerber, any type was fine by her.

Our second is sooo picky. At 19 mos she still needs the nuby or nuby like munchkin type. Mind you, she can drink out of the others ,but definitely has a preferenence for the soft, bottle like nipple. This drives me nuts as she would bite through them when she was teething. I thought I got rid of the bottle at 11 mos, but I think we just replaced it with the nuby sippie.

We also buy apple juice sippie type things with Disney or other character tops and re-use those with water in them on occassion.

Ditto the Nuby sippy. Although not my sons first sippy cup of choice, he will drink out of it now.

We mainly use the take and toss cups with the sippy spout (not the straws) and handles. You can find them at Target, Walmart, and Babies R Us.

I actually find he makes as big a mess with the Nuby as he does with the take and toss. But, being a stay at home mom, I'm right there with a towel to sop up the mess. I don't see spills of any liquid my son drinks a big deal. They clean up, and we're due for a good carpet cleaning in the Spring. Also, when I notice his cup is tipped over on the floor, I'll go sit it up so that it's sitting up right. My son doesn't miss a beat when I do this and I have noticed him being more careful when setting his sippy cup down.

Anywho.

I gave each of my 3 kids a sippy cup when they started table food (around 6 months).

I filled it with water & they didn't really drink it & their teeth/mouth were trying to do that sucking action but they finally got it.

I just used the Gerber ones.

BTW, my kids don't have speech problems. But I have heard it can happen. My oldest was speaking before she was 1 & saying full sentences by the time she was 2 (or sooner) & she pretty much spoke clear as day. My last 2 were quieter but still spoke with out problems.

My son didn't take to the sippy that well at first so we went straight to a straw and he was a pro! He drinks from a straw or and open cup now at 20 months and he is great about not spilling. My daughter on the other hand is 6 months and we just started introducing the sippy. But she wants nothing to do with it. I heard breastfed babies make the transition to a straw better so I am going to try that with her soon. Good luck to you! :)

The cups my son finally settled on are the Take 'n Toss from the The First Years the ones without the straws. I tried a couple different cups: Advent Magic Sippy Cup, a no name brand with a soft spout, and the ones we currently use. I found that the ones with the soft spouts he used more as a thing to chew on. I also started giving him cups with water in them around 6 months with meals. He played with them, occassionally sucking on them, until he was 12 months. At that point he would take 15 oz of formula (or less) a day. I was sick of cleaning 2 bottles a day, so one day I just took away the bottles. And he, to my suprise and my mom, mil, and husband, took right away to the cup as being his only source of liquid. I did make sure he didn't see the bottles after that. We hid the them. We were incredibley lucky.
Good luck :) I hope this helps.

I second this - (the disposable cups) this is actually the ONLY kind of cup my 12 month old will take. I have countless other ones but she refuses them.

My DS also wouldn't catch on to sippy cups. The only way I found out which one he would take was when he grabbed his brother's and cleared out a whole sippy of iced tea.:rotfl: It was the First Years Brand- I like the fact that it doesn't have a removable spout, so nothing to clean or to fall out. I LOVE the fact that it is BPA free (something that was high on my priority list for any kid's product).

My DS would only use the Nuby soft straw cups. He didn't like having to tip his head back to drink. Once he finally learned to do that we just use the take and toss cups with the spout.

My two 2-year-olds would not convert to a sippy cup until about 15 months. I had Nuby-style cups that they never liked with milk, juice, or water. Also, the Nuby-style cups were bad to leak and they could easily push the top in to cause spilling. I gave them away before they converted. My two liked the Gerber 10-oz cups and transitioned to those easily when they were ready. I gave them milk exclusively in the sippy cups and that did the trick since my two like milk better than anything.

DS did not fully figure out the sippy cup until 12 months when we took the bottles away cold turkey. I think he was getting confused because he'd get his bottle for his milk and then the sippies during snacks so he didn't get much practice. I was AMAZED that he grasped it so quickly though. We first started with the straw cup when we went cold turkey because he didn't know how to tilt. Now we are able to use a regular cup. The straw cup was the Nuby with two handles and the regular is a Nuby as well with a soft spout, comes in a 2 back at Babies R Us.

I like the smaller ones with handles on both sides. I nursed my boys so I rarely used bottles. But I started giving both of my boys a very diluted apple juice/water in these sippy cups as soon as they could hold them. They didn't have any trouble with them at all. Hope you find something that helps!:woohoo:
